Hi,

there is a number of nice maps at the bottom of Kismet's webpage
http://www.kismetwireless.net/screenshot.shtml.

How to install Kismet on Nokia 770 and configure it to record/save/log
WiFi signal levels and names of WiFis in an area to generate such maps ?

Frankly speaking I would love to have such local free hotspots signal range maps saved on my Nopkia 770 for use with maemo mapper
while on move not wasting time on scanning hotspots over and over again while on a move.

Downloaded Kismet but dependent libraries are missing.

Whenever you get missing dependencies errors, you should report the exact dependencies which are missing.

> apt-cache show kismet

Package: kismet
Version: 2007.01.R1b-1.0
Priority: optional
Section: user/net
Maintainer: Cezary Jackiewicz (email) <cezary the (4t) symbol eko.one.pl>
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libgcc1 (>= 1:3.4.4), libncurses5 (>= 5.4-1), libpcap0.8 (>= 0.9.3-1), libstdc++6 (>= 3.4.4), ncurses-base
Architecture: armel
Filename: dists/mistral/user/binary-armel/kismet_2007.01.R1b-1.0_armel.deb

Those are the dependencies my installed kismet lists.

Look at the application manager error log (it's available via the menu) to find exactly what dependency is missing.

Then contact the maintainer (email listed above) and ask him to include the required dependencies in the kismet repository, or remove unneeded dependencies from the control file.

I got this installed and working yesterday on 2007HE. It works exactly as I remember it working on a linux desktop. PITA to get installed though!!!! I can't remember the exact steps, but it involved apt-get install --reinstall ncurses-base, once you have the proper repositories set up in your sources.list. I absolutely could not do this from the Application Manager (even in Red Pill mode). It would install halfway and prevent me from uninstalling. I also remember there being _two_ different versions of libpcap somehow, which I had to uninstall both of before libpcap0.8 would install.

Here's the contents of my /etc/apt/sources.list file.
Code:
#maemo:name Nokia Catalogue
#maemo:essential
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/ bora user
#maemo:name Nokia Catalogue (3rd party software)
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/non-certified/ bora user
#maemo:name maemo-hackers
deb http://maemo-hackers.org/apt bora main
#maemo:name mg
deb http://mg.pov.lt/770 bora user other
#maemo:name repository.maemo.org
deb http://repository.maemo.org/ bora free non-free
#maemo:name MUlliNER.ORG Maemo Software (Maemo 3.x)
deb http://www.mulliner.org/nokia770/repository/ bora free
#maemo:name Eko1
deb http://eko.one.pl/maemo mistral user
#maemo:name Repos.maemo mistral
deb http://repository.maemo.org/extras mistral free
#maemo:name Polish Eko1 Kismet Temp (Delete me after you install Kimet)
deb http://eko.one.pl/maemo/ mistral user
#maemo:name bora-extras
deb http://repository.maemo.org/extras bora free non-free
My suggestion (which is worth a shot, may or may not work) is to:

back up your sources.list
replace with what's above
as root:
# apt-get update
# apt-get remove libpcap0.8 libpcap ncurses-base
# apt-get install ncurses-base libpcap0.8
# apt-get install kismet

That will perhaps point folks in the right direction even if it's not the exact thing you need to do. Be creative!
