I contacted Nokia customer service with a technical problem that is a software issue. My N900 stopped broadcasting the media player over the FM transmitter. Other applications would broadcast over the FM transmitter, so it is not a hardware problem. Anyhow, I contacted Nokia customer service back in April and received this automated reply on Friday April 2, 2010:

Nokia Customer Care
Then I heard nothing from them. Nothing, that is, until Friday July 30, 2010. Here is the message:

Thank you for e-mailing the Nokia Care Contact Center.

Based on your concern, I have encountered the email that you sent last April as a part of our service quality check and I would like to apologize if your last email was not properly handled. With this said, if you need assistance, please do inform us.

I hope the information provided proves useful.

Thank you very much for your email. Have a great day.
Great, I thought. Now I can get some help. I replied that my problem was still unresolved and I still would appreciate help. Here is the reply I got yesterday, August 5, 2010:

Thank you for e-mailing the Nokia Care Contact Center.

Based on your concern, please check if it is properly setup and if it is I would suggest reupdating the software of the N900 and check if this will help resolve the issue.

I hope the information provided proves useful.

What in the hell does that mean? "Please check if it is properly setup"? Absolutely useless. I was hoping that someone who actually knows something about Maemo would suggest something to try that does not involve reinstalling the operating system.

Four months after my inquiry, I get a standard reply, with no actual information on how to "check if it is properly setup" or "reupdate the software."

Nokia: you have just lost a customer.

Looks to me like they are suggesting you reflash the firmware. Did you try that already?

I think they wanted you to try reinstalling the mediaplayer. If you have some programs from extras-devel.. they maight have caused the problem with the mediaplayer. Make sure to purge it when uninstalling.

Open terminal as root:
1. dpkg -P mediaplayer
2. apt-get update
3. apt-get install mediaplayer

They were hoping that within those four months of waiting for a reply you would have done what other n900 users have done and put it on ebay

By the way - you might want to update your little sig because as far as I know Android has market mode now, Almost every app can be run in portrait simply by using ctrl-shift R (and there is even a launcher to do that for you), Someone posted instructions on getting a BT mouse to work with the device and two days ago they said they would be pushing something to the app repos for USB-host mode.

I made it 4 months ago when there wasnt even an active n900 Android project and no BT mouse / keyboard project. I have only changed the links to current threads. Android doesn't have 3G data or voice yet. USB host mode is not here.

But I will change it later today. Thanks for your concern

Interesting. I sent Nokia a very firm email because my USB port does not work and person I spoke to said they do not do international warranties so they won't fix it where I live (I bought my N900 in US but live in UK).

I also got the automated response saying I would be contacted in up to 48hrs. That was about a week ago and I have been fuming because I have not heard anything back but based on your situation it seems I should be a bit more patient and wait till around end of November before receiving a pointless response.
