Do you guys have any recommendations to explain why when people call me, sometimes the screen's backlight will turn on but I won't be able to actually pickup the call? Or when i switch between portrait and landscape {or vice versa} that it lags so much that I cannot pickup the call? overall, why is it so laggy when receiving a call?

sounds like the phone is running low on memory (Ram) and swapping, which is a common occurrence on n900 as they are memory starved. Do a search for the "optimize n900" script. it has helped me bigtime with this problem, as it lets you restart processes and daemons that are leaking memory without closing your currently loaded apps.

I read about this script and it's supposedly not necessarily the most prudent approach to fixing this issue as it refreshes all processes which can be problematic.

Someone released hildon-desktop with backport fixes from what will probably eventually become pr1.3 - that said, it didn't work at all for me. Screen lights up, maybe 5 seconds pass, then it decides to start ringing.

Here's a long thread discussing the issue

This post is supposed to fix it - doesn't work for me, but others have met with success. Give it a try.

check if you have things running in the background, usually only happens when system resources are low for me.
