It's the icon of disabled wlan. If you have downloaded wlan on/off app, it disables wlan when off...
To turn it back on, just click on the Wifi Switcher icon (see screenshot). If you dont see it, try scrolling up.

On a related wifi question, when searching for wifi i get the normal symbols, but some wifi connections have a dot at the top of the signal strength.
I mean like this.....

Unusual -
Why is that?

The one u say "unusual' is actually ssid of an peer to peer network,, basically someone must have used their laptop as a wireless router.
Its an adhoc network
the one "normal" is access point / infrastructure / router/gateway
Have you not upgraded to PR1.2? I think PR1.2 does not support connecting to adhoc networks

They are your WiFi modes.
The first one indicates "Infrastructure Mode". Used for web browsing through routers or switches.
The second one indicates "Ad hoc Mode". Used for sending and receiving data between two WiFi devices without the need for routers.
If you have a WiFi printer you would connect in "Ad hoc Mode" to send images for printing.

Cheers for that path finder. Yeah im on PR1.2 and it shows the connections but im not able to connect as they are encrypted. I assumed it was that stopping me not that it cant handle adhoc connections.
Im not bothered either way, i dont need/want to connect to them, just wondered why it was different.

Have you got WiFi Switcher installed? If so it means you're WLAN is disabled via that app. Tap the status bar, then tap the WiFi Switcher button. You should get a list of WiFi access points after a few seconds. Now if you click outside of the list, you'll be returned to the desktop and that icon will have disappeared. If you repeat the above process, instead of getting the list of WiFi APs, you'll get a notification that WLAN has been disabled and the icon will reappear.
If you don't have WiFi Switcher, then it just means your WLAN is not available for some reason. In either case restarting the phone should clear it.
