I had this happen to me recently with OS2006. Something obviously munged some audio-handling files. In my case, audio was restored when I reflashed to OS2007HE.

starting to feel like I am using a windows device.... "something doesn't work right... reflash [reinstall] and start from scratch! 
Gonna backup my setup after I get all the apps I want set back up. I am debating whether or not I should go back to OS06. Never really got to play with it. Just jumped straight to OS07.
