I don't get your original problem - are you saying you can't enter the character "w" from the unlock string you were told to enter? If so, why not?

Is there a limit to how many times you can attempt to unlock it? I thought some phones will only allow something like 3 attempts before locking it forever...

I still believe you were scammed mate. Flash to PR1.2 Global and you should be fine.

try it yourself, its just not an option + and p will appear, no w!

oh i did think of one more suggestion! pre pr1.2 support there was an app for using *# services, now i dont know its name, if it works on pr1.2, and i never used it myself, but theres a small chance someone thought to put a 'w' in there!

Hmm
Could it be that your phone is not locked and you just flashed the PR1.1 firmware but having PR1.2 installed before? there is some kind of incompatibility about the baseband...

Edit:
try to enter your code here:

settings -> Enter code to unlock SIM card

Edit 2:
Forget about this. I thinks this is just for the sim card.

with another sim card if it boots and you can enter pin then it is probably ok, have you gone to the manual search for networks?

As per other posts, I too think the OP got scammed, the issue does not sound like a locked phone issue.

Vodafone UK N900's are NOT locked
whoever sold you the "unlock code" is a rip off merchant because it isnt needed
simply put any sim from any other company in and it works fine

I've tried, orange, o2, tesco mobile and a couple of foreign sim's I have here and they all work
