I recently purchased my Nokia N900 and as you will see I am not very good when it comes to its technology.

What I need is a GPS application that can be used offline, i.e. it wont cost me anything.

Is there any applications for Nokia N900 that does this and how can a newbie like me get it to work?

the data connection doesn't download maps or anything, its just assisted gps data really, so costs should be minimal.

if you cant live with minimal you may be able to set up an invalid data connection using fapn, then tell the maps application to use that, this will make it take a lot longer to find your location on startup if it works at all, i haven't tried it.

One good idea is to use Sygic Mobile Maps (costs a bit but just once). The default map app works too, you just can't search anything without a internet connection and it doesn't have voice navigation.

no it doesn't, maps are preloaded, or at least should be. try it, start up and disable internet, zoom to a city you've never been to, so wouldn't be cached, and all the streets will still be there.

"n900 gps" does not display maps at all. Ovi Maps does. As does Sygic Mobile Maps, and numerous other programs. Sygic Mobile Maps are not downloaded on the fly from the internet. Your N900 usually comes preloaded with maps for Ovi Maps for the country you bought it in. It can also download then on the fly from the internet, and will also look for extra/new/updated info if you have an internet connection open. There's a Map Downloader utility for Windows to manually preload maps into N900. Might be useful if you've reflashed emmc.

i suppose you are using the built-in maps application? when it starts, just tap somewhere outside the pop-up that wants you to select a data connection. u might have to do this twice or three times as it keeps popping up. however, this way no data connection will be used. as already pointed out in this thread, it will take much longer to get an initial gps fix on your position.

usually, maps in the built-in maps application (ovi maps) are downloaded from the web as you go (at least on my device no maps, not even for my country, were preloaded). if you dont want that, you can download the maps for the areas you need to your computer beforehand and transfer them to your n900.

you can find maps for different regions here: http://www.hpsblog.com/2009/07/direc...0-without.html

connect your n900 to your pc via usb (as mass storage device). extract the files you have downloaded and copy them to the folder cities/diskcache on your n900.

http://www.hpsblog.com/2009/07/direc...0-without.html is dead, use this one instead: http://nokiamaps.site666.info

(Use the older maps for 3.0 that the site says work with 3.04 - it is the smaller link, so read the page carefully.)
