I just thought about a notifier that informs you what contact comes online / changes its status message / goes offline or whatever like we know it from almost every messenger on a PC.

It could be the same notification style like sms or email.

That's just a little brainstorm and I want to know if someone else likes this idea.

Yeah like buddy pounce? Good idea but I think if it is implemented for all contacts, we will be flooded with notifications. So maybe, we can choose buddy pounce for contacts that we need only.

That's a great idea! i have it in my mind for long time, thinking about post a brainstorm!
I dont think you will be flooded with notifications, think about Windows Messenger, XYZ contact gets online/offline and thats it all.

Yep. Thats what I also thought about so there should be a config Interface to choose that.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Phone_control#...ication_dialog for notifications, a C equivalent of the code is welcome, I need it for something :P
Empathy (based on Telepahty) notifies about online/offline contacts, so I guess telepathy sends dbus signals when a user goes online/offline, so it should be doable with a daemon.

That means that we need a daemon which is customizable (notify just for chosen contacts) and which listens on this contact online/offline dbus signal?

I'll take a look at this. If it's possible I could make a python script that could work (you'll receive notifications on signon/signoff) and that could be a starting point for you to maybe develop a daemon in C/C++.

i think a notification for signon only as why do you need a notification if someone signs off ... useless info in my opinion!!!

but yes a notification for signon would be great!

You'll be amazed at what stalkers using IMs in phones want.

Excuse my ignorance, but what do empathy and telepathy actually do for the user ?

> just notify the user when contacts come online & offline ?
> organize all alerts into one stream ?
> Is it displayed in a nice UI ?

I think it's great, whatever it is, i'm sure i'd think it was better if i actually knew what it was !
