That is quite an impressive number. Maemo Downloads only serves some 1-1.5 million downloads per week at this point.

is it only me who feels that - seeing these 2 figures - the ovi store download numbers aren't all that impressive? (or the other way round: the community repos are even more successful than i'd have ever thought?)

Ovi store debacle aside, its natural for VPs to leave when big boss leaves. Nokia needs to start learning from North American companies, one how to give powerful presentations, two how to add bling on top of your OS, third, you dont stab your own customers

The difference between an N900 running Maemo and a device running iOS or Android is that, with the N900, you absolutely HAVE to hack/install programs to bring it up to a proper level of functionality, whereas with iOS or Android, you hack/install programs just for fun.

Dont want "magic" presentaions. That's emarrassing - like watching a home shopping channel.
Don't want "bling" - useless. That's for teenage girls.
Don't wanna be stabbed... but above all: don't wanna be enchained, either.
Both Ari Jaaksi and Anssi Vanjoki were extraordinarily trustworthy because of how they communicated. No magic, no bling, just say what you need to say and leave the stage. When one of them said "I think this device is quite OK. Not bad.", I knew I needed to buy it now. When some of the "North American" executives talk about "magic", "innovation", "absolute beauty", "<non-existant word> display",... my immediate reaction is: "Hey, what's he trying to hide? This is just a kitchen knife, why should it cut tomatoes better than others?" I don't trust such people and I don't buy from them. In fact, I've learned they never deliver. They need such embarrassing wording because there's nothing else they have to offer.
My great fear is that once people like Ari and Anssi are gone, the cheap marketeers will fill their places and we'll never see a serious, long.term strategy from Nokia again... nor brilliant devices. It'll just be average, like the rest of the market.

Why? Because those positions are "trust" positions. They carry big power on themselves; and are very attached to the big boss.
In a lot of cases this is merely symbolic, in others it is taken to the letter.
You also have to consider how finns must feel about a NA guy taking the reins... I have heard rumors that, internally, people at Nokia blame the USA division of the failures in that market, and in consequence the bad press Symbian receives. So imagine this same people getting told that a NA guy is coming to take over. Madness.
IMO, the CEO position was for Vanjoki. And Elop could have been his VP and right hand. So you have a guy with a clear vision and powerful background at the helm; and a new guy with a fresh perspective as his right hand to make the slight corrections the course needs.
And I swear that, if because of Elop, Nokia goes Android without giving MeeGo a fair chance, I will never, ever, buy anything from them again.
