Hi,

I'm the developer of periscope, a subtitles downloader app and module in Python : http://code.google.com/p/periscope/

I've received a request today to support the n900 on top of my usual Ubuntu and tar package. I own a n810 and I believe that they share the same Python version.

It would not be a huge work but it would require more testing to support the older Python 2.5 language (currently, I'm building on the Python version provided by the latest Ubuntu, which is currently Python 2.6) and to build the package into Diablo and Fremantle extra. I don't think I'm willing to make that commitment if there will only be a few users.

Would there be interest in a command-line app to download subtitles for videos from your n8X0/n900 ?

It is also a python module, so it could be integrated in Python video apps such as MediaBox fairly easily. Do developers of such apps wish to add support for automatic subtitles downloading ?

Yep mate its definitely needed......however as you have suggested a version which can act as a plugin on n900 Media player or Media Box etc. is much more desirable as an end user....

Yes would be great. Still I think a standalone version that would work with the older tablets not just the new kid on the block would be better

A n900 plugin would mean more work and less users.

Thank you

We want it all! No kidding, we would appreciate any work you could do on this.

Maybe a modular approach would be better. First a working Python script both on Maemo 4 and 5, then the standalone app and finally a plugin for Fremantle's media player. In the meantime you could take some help from other developers.

Cheers.

In any case, there will be a command-line version for older tablets. I'm a N810 user and don't own a N900.

@ivgalvez
A working script should be available in a matter of week (it's just porting the current Python 2.6 script to Python 2.5.4). Packaging may take more time (as I've never managed to push a package to extra-devel)

I don't think a standalone app is really useful, I prefer to see it integrated in other apps. I have a Unix philosophy of things : do one thing and do it well. I'll concentrate on the search and let others concentrate on the integration (I've made a Nautilus and Totem example on Ubuntu, others did integrate it with Boxee, other media center, usenet clients, ...).

I won't be able to do the sample integration for the Fremantle's media player (unless I emulate the n900) but I'll be available to help others integrate it and providing updates to the code.
