I installed TV Catchup Player yesterday on PR1.3 and it's working fine for me so far.

Perhaps running it from an Xterm might yield some clues as to why it's failing:
$ python /opt/tvcplayer/tvcplayer.py

Or maybe you could delete TVC's preferences and fill in your account details again:
$ rm -r /home/user/.tvcplayer

tried running it from the term and get the following

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Debian 3:1.10.2.legal-1osso30+0m5) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

~ $ python /opt/tvcplayer/tvcplayer.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/opt/tvcplayer/tvcplayer.py", line 5, in <module>
from PyQt4 import QtGui,QtCore,QtMaemo5
RuntimeError: the sip module implements API v8.0 but the PyQt4.QtGui module requires API v7.1
~ $

a little confused? i know i am.

OK. That's a known problem with the Python libraries on PR1.3.
More information (and a fix, for the more knowledgeable user) here.

many thanks for your help. Your solution worked for me and also a few other apps that had aslo stopped working....for example maelophone now also works.

as described in the link the problem relates to python2.5-sip4/python2.5-qt4

which can be worked around by downgrading to the package via root with the following command:

apt-get install python2.5-sip4=4.10.5-maemo0

once again many many thanks.
