A friend of mine gave me his old bluetooth GPS device today; he doesnt need it any longer.

First thing I tried on my 770 was Maemo Mapper, of course. Worked great - as far as I can tell, because I was to lazy to get out of my apartment and move around - At least it located me correctly.

So, what else is there to do with a bluetooth GPS device and a 770 running OS2006?

The GPS-thing seems to be rather dumb (doesnt have a display, doesnt track anything), so the first thing that comes to my mind here is to use the 770 simply to display and/or record the data from the GPS. Maemo Mapper doesnt seem to be the right application for this, there must be something simpler, maybe a simple shell script or something? Oh yes, and: will the 770 keep its connection to the GPS with the hard cover closed, does anybody know?

Speaking of shell scripts, how do I interact with such a device from the command line? I'm clueless.

Ideas on what else to do are very welcome. I feel I got a wonderful new toy here but dont know what to do with it.

you can set the 770 to maintain connections with the cover on. its somewhere in the configuration app.

you can find some command line lovin in this thread...
http://internettablettalk.com/forums...ead.php?t=9577

as that thread shows, kismet will work with a GPS, if you configure kismet to do so. there is also another package for the 770 that you need for kismet to work with a bluetooth GPS, but the name escapes me.
EDIT - the package you need is gpsd for the 770. the n800 comes with it in the default firmware build. check maemo.org download area for it.

i am not sure what else you would want to do with the GPS without an app such as maemo mapper or kismet, as you would have to decipher the NMEA sentences that it gives.
