AFAIK we currently don't have the same version as the N8. Doesn't the N8 come with 4.6 ATM while we're using 4.7?

Anyway, it's probably less important to have the same Qt version. What's more important is that while Qt in general makes it (a lot) easier to port applications, it's still an effort. You may have an application that was designed with the Symbian screen resolution in mind. You may have one that requires multitouch. You may see some unexpected minor issues even with a working application. For a commercial developer, solving these issues translates to costs. Even if the costs are only a few days instead of weeks - it's still real money. They may very well decide not to port from Symbian to Maemo in spite of it being only a small effort.

It not only gives you a crash course in C++ / object oriented programming, Qt python bindings and embedded Qt, but also the basic ideas with Qt, the history behind it and purpose.
Actually Qt HAS been around for quite some years before Nokia adopted it from TrollTech. This book doesn't cover any gui specific programming under hildon, so one has to read up on the specifics and deviations in order to produce any N900 or Symbian 3 (N8) apps.
But it is a good start to learn about Qt.

Also, remember that Qt is actually a lot more than just a GUI framework, it has a lot of classes and functionality for various purposes. There are a lot of goodies, even for component based programming (like COM on windows), classes for daemons (linux) , services (windows) and networking.
It is also very easy to localize your application with the Qt Linguist tool.

PySide has just entered beta, so it is not ready for prime time yet.
Will it be officially supported in MeeGo? Well, maybe; it depends on what the policy for inclusion in official app stores will be: as an example, currently you can't have a python-based app in Ovi, 'cause python itself (let alone the PySide library) doesn't come preinstalled with the N900 and they don't accept apps with "external" dependencies.
From some early discussions in a MeeGo mailing list it appears that the general tendency for futures MeeGo app stores will be the same: only self-contained apps depending on official, preinstalled libraries will be accepted, the others belong to community / personal repositories.

Tomotko is also a Qt app.
