Cheaper than using both an emitter AND a receiver. It's just for using the device as a remote-control substitute or something like that.

None of the pre-installed applications of your device use the infrared port, but it enables the development of third party applications requiring an infrared port. The infrared port is not IrDA compatible.

So, do we have any application for the IrDA?

I am curious if it would be possible to modify or "arch" the POS sensors and/or camera or camera sensors or both/more to take the place of the receiving end in order to have fully functional IrDA.

Even if it worked only a few feet or inches apart it would be extremely valuable even for sending small files. And far more secure than BT or Wifi which we all know can be subject to MITM attacks.

Even if doable, would be *real* pita to implement. Not to mention, that 2nd party would need to aim on camera sensor - so, o receiving from our infrared emitter.
