Flashed FIASCO...

Says it was successful, Nokia screen appeared on phone, yellow LED is lit. How long before it should reboot as the message stated in the "How to" guides?

Ah... I see...
Instructions are missing a key piece of info - that you must manually boot phone. They state that it will reboot automatically.
Seems to have worked so far. Time to check whether flashing solves my original problem.

I suggest you use the power search to search the term 'updating', click the first result and read.

It seems your only issue is user error!
It's also stated quite clearly that there is a work-around, which I followed.

Using -R will reboot the phone automatically after it's done.

Instructions said not to use the -R command if flashing both. I'll keep this in mind for next time.

Is there anything I shouldn't expect to be restored from the backup???
My apps and settings have not been restored.

Flashing did not solve the original problems.
-N900 still drains battery faster than Tera Patrick drains a...
-"Duplicates" of images still appear in Photo list.
-Virtual keyboard still fails to appear.
-Auto-capitalization and text prediction still do not work much of the time.
-Conversations app still closes randomly.

Could a bad battery be the cause of all this???
The phone's not even a year old.

IIRC maemo wiki firmware flashing guide instructs you to first flash emmc with flasher without -R switch and then with it. Also guide says that you should avoid using 64-bit windows. Looking what you have posted makes me wonder that have you really read wiki guide _completely_ before doing anything.

.edit
also your problems list is way to vague and useless to begin any debugging. Please be specific!

..edit
from where you have installed apps?testing or devel?

As I stated previously, I first did everything step-by-step as directed by the wiki, and when that was unsuccessful I had to read the myriad other "How to" guides, all of which conflict in various ways.
My final attempts (the successful one included) came from these instructions in the wiki:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware

I assume you mean my problem list is "too" vague, but I don't know how much more clear I could be. It makes me wonder whether you've read this thread _completely_ before responding, because the first post, and the previous threads to which it refers, are exhaustively detailed.

Most apps have not come from testing or devel (actually, I don't think any came from devel).

Can you be more specific? What is your usage? Are you using a lot of wifi or 3g? If you want to improve battery then change network to GSM from settings if you don't use 3G that much. Also decrease wifi power to 10Mw from the internet connections options in settings.Decrease the screen brightness.I only keep it on 1 bar.

Download & install tracker cfg from the devel repos and add those extra duplicate files to a no watch directory in tracker so they are not shown in photo list

You have to activate virtual keyboard from the settings. It does not come up by default.

This too has to be activated from the settings menu.

A bad battery won't cause all such problems in the software part of the phone.
