Hi All,
Liked the look of VLC Remote http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=59858 so decided to give it a go as it would be really useful for me but I am no expert with pc's and couldnt find a straightforward guide that worked for me but after visiting a few sites and using a combination of information I am now up and running!!!

This is a N00B guide to help others in (hopefully) a straightforward way!!

1) ensure you have the most up to date VLC player installed on your pc - go here to check http://www.videolan.org/
2) download the 'setup helper' software here http://hobbyistsoftware.com/Download...e/VLCSetup.exe install it then click the 'setup vlc' button.
3) now with vlc running with a movie or audio file selected test that you can access vlc control on your pc by typing http://localhost:8080/ into the address bar of internet explorer - you should see the image which is shown on dridk's post on this thread (6th one down) http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=59858&page=3 - if you dont see that image i am afraid i cant help you any further as i dont know what went wrong
3a) close your browser
4) now find out your ip address (on your pc) by
go to start menu
select 'run'
type in 'cmd' and press enter
in the cmd window that popped up type 'ipconfig' then press enter
your ip address will now be displayed (it will start with 192) on my pc it was listed as an IPv4 Address
5) open browser on your n900 and type in http://YOURIPADDRESSYOUJUSTFOUND:8080 and press search/enter on your n900 keyboard, you should now see the same image you saw on your pc's browser on step 3 if you dont see that image i am afraid i cant help you any further as i dont know what went wrong
6) close the browser on your n900
7) open vlc remote app then configure account
8) in name type whatever you want
9) in Ip: type in the ip address that you found in step 4 this should be the numbers and . only and no letters such as http:
10) in Port: type 8080 then click 'save'
11)now highlight the account you just created and press the 'use' button
12)hopefully it should now be working for you

I know this is a real N00B description and a lot of you guys will read this and say how stupidly simple most of what I have listed is ... the reason I have done this is because there are a lot of people out there such as myself who try to use some apps which need setting up and give up after about half an hour of trying/testing/googling/frustrating etc etc.

Anyway nice one to dridk who created this app - brilliant app as I have my pc in my dining room connected to my tv in the living room so whenever i am watching a movie using this setup I have to get up and walk into the dining room to pause or rewind the movie .... not anymore so cheers dridk!!!

Hey.. it really works.. however I am unable to browse the file inside my My video from windows.. why I cant access inside the folder but only from the file I opened from VLC from my desktop PC?

I'm using vlc-remote every day with my mother (to pray holy rosary youtubes).

I did never have any problems with browsing files with Windows XP.
I've configured it a long time ago.
I think there is an xml-file on the desktop where you can define the directories which the internet interface is allowed to browse.
It seems to me that your problem concerns the desktop and not the n900.

it is quite weird.. it is accessible to all file now.. I just jump back the directory... its working smoothly.
