I have downloaded and installed the N800 version of Garnet VM on my N800.

I installed the Palm Desktop on my Win XP Laptop and synchronised all my existing data and apps off/from my trusty Tungsten E using Local USB Hotsync

Then I switched the desktop Hotsync option to accept network connections and tried to synchronise the data off my PC onto my N800.

I am pleased to say with a little bit of customisation tweaking of the Hotsync options for data transfer I seem to have successfully transfered all data and apps to the N800.

Obviously not every program installed on my Tungsten E works in the Garnet VM but I am surprised about how many apps seem to work with little effort.

Need more time to test apps, will provide further feedback if anyone is interested. I still have lots of contact and notes on my Tungsten E from years of use, so its nice to have a backup on my N800. For those who want data off their Palms onto their Internet Tablets this might be a good option?

I note that this beta version of Garnet software for the N800 will expire on May 31st 2008.

---edit--- I really don't know how stable this Garnet VM software is at emulating a Palm and I have ensured that all my existing Palm data is fully backed up on my Tungsten E and main PC. Playing with copied data and software between Laptop and N800 to see how stable it really is.

Do you know if an app like SlingPlayer for Palm will work on the Garnet VM? I think SlingPlayer will let you download and try for 30 days, so if some tries this, I'd like to know if you were able to get it to work.

Also, I registered to download the Garnet VM, but i still haven't been sent a confirmation email to allow me to download it. Does anyone have any experience with this. It's been 24 hrs, and usually email links are immediately sent.

Thanks and I look for to experimenting with the new VM!

Well, I guess I spoke too soon. After I posted this, I checked my email, and what do you know, I had the link to download Garnet VM. I tried myself to install SlingPlayer (trial) through a SD card inserted into my N800, after I installed the Garnet VM. The software works, but it would not allow me to add my Slingbox into the Slingbox directory. It kept getting stuck at the password and acted like I hadn't entered the password in correctly (said password must be less than 21 characters). Otherwise, I was not able to try and connect to my Slingbox, so alas, I'll have to wait for someone more clever than I! If anyone gets somewhere with this, you've got an anxious Slingbox owner eagerly awaiting to watch his Slingbox on their N800.

Thanks

Was able to get Slingplayer to install. Got the same issue with the password. You have to enter it with graffiti for some reason, using the onscreen keyboard gives the error about needing to be 21 characters. I was able to connect to sling box.
2 Issues:
It would crash when trying to play a video stream.
It would act like it was streaming in audio only mode but did not getting any sound.

Still trying to tweak the settings and see if anything changes.

Looking for an alternative to the hotsync. Are the Palm app data files accessible, or are they part of the VM binary? I'm not sure I still have Palm Desktop software available, but I can get my .pdb files off my ancient Clie. I've downloaded the N770 VM, so we should see later tonite how well it works.

Got it to sync with my Mac using Missing Sync (which I need for my Wrist PDA). Still they need to make this this go into portrait mode and full screen.

Can you summarize the customization of options you did to make Hotsync work?

Follow up: Installed Garnet VM on my Nokia 770 running most recent OS2006. (apps run on internal memory, not my 2GB MMC card, but I do have 64MB of swap on the MMC enabled).

- Initial startup and load was very slow - took several minutes for the VM to available for use. Do N800 users experience this? Have not tried restarting to see if this was permanent or a 1st-time event. I am using the default settings with full-screen enabled. Agree, rotating the image 90 degrees in full-screen mode would be useful.

- Stock apps in the VM are calendar, memo, address book, calculator, and preferences. (I forget if todo list, which I didn't use much anyway, is in there or not).

- My hand remembers Graffiti! Woot!!! (Makes me think Access could score a noticeable win by selling a Graffiti port for the N8xx - I'd buy it!)

- Haven't tried hotsyncing yet, I've been using a Linux box for that for a few years and if I have Palm Desktop anyplace, it's on a secondary partition of an ancient desktop system.

- Agree with some observations that this may be more marketing for their VM technology than a viable product - there aren't that many Palm apps I truly miss.

I use Treo 650 in combination with N800, so loading the Garnet Virtual Machine is primarily a matter of curiosity. Hot Synch failed, but the version of Palm Desktop on this particular PC is probably an older one. I will have an opportunity to try a newer version later in the week.

GVM includes the older Datebook and Address applications, rather than the Calendar and Contacts programs included with curent Palm OS versions. However the Treo still generates backwards compatible Datebook and Address databases. I transferred Datebook, Address and Memo databases plus a few applications from Treo to N800 using an SD card. The data was accepted correctly, and the apps installed fine.

Now I can HotSynch Datebook, Address and Memo data with PC, but process still fails when PC tries to backup other applications installed in GVM.

ToDo application is not included in the GVM. I borrowed a copy from the ROM of a Sony Clie UX50. It installed and starts, but does not run correctly. The GVM will not let me delete it.

Be aware that if you change the size of the GVM memory allocation (default 16MB) all data and add-on applications are lost. Starting over I realized that I could use Bluetooth to transfer files from Treo to N800. The GVM does not seem to be aware of Bluetooth, but files can be received into the N800's own file system and then installed the same as if they were on SD card.
