One way to keep a permanent installation of Ubuntu for windows users would be to install it in a vmplayer image. You can download free vmplayer from here and even a pre-built vmplayer image for Ubuntu gutsy from here.

Thanks,
For my experience:
Yes, Ubuntu will automatically recognize the device, you do not have to mount the device or anything.
For flashing to work, you will need to start the nokia device by pushing the power and the "home" keys simultaneously, so Ubuntu won't show you it is attached. Normally, it will show the SD card slots as individual drives. When you start typing the "sudo" commands the terminal text will tell you that it found the device.

Not sure how ubuntu and VMWare works...

Using the method described by sachin007, it worked without a hitch.

thanks! it worked for me. Very easy to do with a bootable cd. Copy and paste in terminal makes it more easy.

Took a few hours for me and i almost bricked my N800 (no thanks to Parallels), but VMWare Fusion saved the day.

I'm loving it so far, but several websites seem to crash the browser, websites i had to problems with.

Someone try going to pdaphonehome.com and see if the browser crashes?

Oh, and waaaaaaa, where's the FM radio?

I used my copy of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon to boot from, followed the instructions and it all worked a treat.

It should do Gizmo over a bluetooth headset, but for now its not entirely working properly. It pairs, routes the audio to the headset, but the headset isn't playing it.

Update: worked perfectly fine with ubuntu with VMWare. I had the vmimage of Ubuntu, followed the instructions and booom.

Thanks guys, I am loving the new OS.

one thing I noticed, if you have a charger hooked up with the N800 and you try to reboot with Home button ON, it will boot as normal i.e. won't goto the USB mode at all, so make sure that you already charged N800 before you Flash it.

I test the gizmo work fine, no crash so far(not with the bluetooth headset as I don't have one ).

IIRC to install gizmo you go to "communications" program menu and run "Gizmo (Video & IM)", it will install itself.
