Hello fellow N900ians! lol I just got my N900 today and it's used. Should I flash it just to wipe everything off because it had some apps on it and it was running somewhat sluggish with 6 windows open?

Figure this will be the best place to find out about it and get some good info/help on the situation.

Let me know what you think and if you need more info.

I think you should reflash it, as you'd learn to reflash sooner or later. IMHO it's better to earn now then in the most critical moment. ^^

Updating the firmware

After reflashing you must connect to internet (via wifi for example), perform update and then install rootsh. You definitely need root before everything else.

Come back when you've done. Lots of people here would be willingly to show you around.

9000, I'm interested, should we backup the N900 content before reflashing? Normally is it recommended to backup using the micro SD or via Ovi Suite backup? And how do we get all the apps reinstalled after reflashing?

(sorry, I don't know much about this. Laptops normally came with a DVD you just need to run to 'reflash' the factory settings). I think this reflashing should come with the N900 manual.

There is an app on the N900 called Backup which can do all this.

Hi Joseph. I didn't recomend Ichigo7 to backup because he just got this N900 nothing to backup at this moment, I think.

Had you needed to backup your data, you could use backupmenu which can be found in the extras.

Your contacts and bookmarks could be kept if you just reflashed the ROM. All you data would be erased if you reflash the eMMC as well. Either case, your applications installed would not be kept, you could use the following command to backup a list of the package you installed:

Code:
dpkg --get-selections > installed.txt
Take this file installed.txt elsewhere before reflash. After you reflashed, you could put back the installed.txt somewhere and run the following command as root, provided you've rootsh installed already:

Code:
root
cat /<path to the file>/install.txt | dpkg --set-selections
apt-get dselect-upgrade

Do a full flash (rootfs and eMMC) to clear it properly. But you might want to backup the Ovi maps data (it is in the cities folder on the main storage when you plug it in to your computer) because that isn't included in the eMMC image (although there is a download for it somewhere if you need to and it will auto download what it needs if the folder is empty).
