I re-read through some of the transcript... it's too bizarre for words.

I'm pretty sure it's the SIM, as the "Enter code to remove operator lock" (which the TM rep insisted meant the phone was carrier-locked) only appears when the SIM is installed.
My never locked N900 has that same message concerning entering code to remove operator lock. I find it difficult to believe that your device has to be locked for that to appear. Mine works fine on both AT&T and T-Mobile, hardly the behavior of a carrier locked device.

3 weeks ago I got my n900 back from having the usb port repaired and noticed the remove operator lock option. I was going to Australia the week after and was going to buy an ozzy sim, so I tried a payg sim to make sure it hadn't been locked in repair. the other sim worked so put my contract one back in but noticed the wifi wouldn't find my home wifi and hasn't found any wifi since even with my ozzy sim. I'm thinking this supports the sim card theory. It's getting sent off for repair on my return if it's still under warranty. Hoping they can't fix it and have to send me a shiney new one.

You could open the terminal just before startup and:

Code:
dmesg > /home/user/MyDocs/demesg.txt
And compy it here.. also installing Sysklogd (which will give you a more complete picture than dmesg) and than look the log might give you a better clue about the problem.

I was thinking about this post on the train on the way to work this morning.
I scanned and couldn't find anything, as expected (I frequently find people with phones and laptops broadcasting, as well as businesses we're passing).
I enabled offline mode, then disabled it... and tried again.
I'm floored... it immediately started working!

I have no idea how, but the wifi chip must've gotten into some odd state. It doesn't make ANY sense to me at all that this could persist through many, many reboots, 3 or 4 reflashes, etc., but it's working now.

Thanks to all who replied... this was an interesting experience for sure!

Aha, I've got an HP netbook that had the same problem. I managed to get the wifi chip into a bad state (by installing a copy of Fedora that had a bad driver for the chip), and couldn't get the wifi back on even after rebooting. The chip had to be specifically reset somehow, or it would never come back...
