I have exactly the same problem. I received my N900 for Christmas 2010, so it's not exactly old, and it was pre-loaded with the latest firmware (I'm told).

My problem is that it's soooo very slow, especially with the call app. Sometimes I might be writing an SMS (wifi off usually, no other apps open) with the keyboard open, and if a call comes, I snap the keyboard shut and try to receive the call. Usually the caller stops trying to call before I can even answer, because the screen just goes black and does not respond. Just today I've had to calls go into voicemail because even though the phone was in my hand, I wasn't able to answer.

Same thing with switching apps. Usually I only have my email client open, and an SMS open, and trying to switch between those two is a bloody nightmare! The screen either goes black or doesn't respond to touch. Usually the email client will time out and ask me to force quit the app. Same with the browser and app installer. I have tried uninstalling all apps and themes that I don't actively use to no avail.

The application manager takes up two minutes (at least) to load up, and is slow at installing and uninstalling anything (especially uninstalling!). The browser isn't slow in and of itself.

I usually don't have the wifi on, or any apps running, and it still manages to be slow. The issues shouldn't be with the amount of widgets running as the N900 should be designed for heavier use than I'm subjecting it to!

The N900 is only snappy when I have no applications open and I'm switching between the various desktops. As soon as I launch _anything_, I get problems.

Sorry to be such a moan, but I do hope there's a fix out there for this!
U can try my tools! Hope it helps!

What is reflashing? I keep seeing it on the forums, and I'm not sure what it is! I don't want to do anything rash to my device. Have backed up all my data and restored to factory settings, and it seems to be running a little better but not as well as I'd like.

Before re-flashing, how about just re-booting the N900 - could be some application issue. Remove the battery for 5 mins and re-boot it. Check if any improvement?

I think re-flashing could be last option.

Version 20.2010.36-2. Should be up-to-date? I've tried to run the update facility and no updates come up!

It's up-to-date. Next up you'd like to show us a list of packages your previous owner installed such that we can figure out what's going wrong:

Under Xterminal, type:
Code:
maemo-list-user-packages > /home/user/MyDocs/package.list
Then connect your N900 to your PC via the USB cable, choose 'Mass Storage' in N900 such that the N900 can be mounted as a flash drive. In the newly mapped flash drive, find the 'package.list' and attach it here for our investigation.

P.S. If you've problem finding the '>' for your keyboard layout, just open this page in N900 and copy and paste the above command to your xterminal.

With the fantastic new programs available on this site (overclocking, Community SSU, 9 windows, backupmenuj my N900 is faster safer and more reliable than ever, far faster than when it was new. I'm sorry for those of you who haven't experienced these programs yet think you know anything about the N900.

i have been thinking that i am the one who experience slowness and unresponsiveness. and i blame myself for not knowing how maemo or linux works, or i must have screwed up something during certain apps installation. NOW i can be more confident to say that i am not at fault. Either our devices are defective or i dont know.

Maybe those who have very responsive N900 can write down the installed appls and any configuration with xterm, so that we can see if we have missed out any important tweaks.

of coz, i have the overclocking tool called QCPUFreq, i can feel only a slight difference but in the end, it becomes unresponsive when few apps are launched.

Hope there is cure to this.

The following packages might cause problems:

scim-pinyin
hermes
recaller
shortcutd
callnotify

Remove them first. Reboot and then check the system performance, especially on taking calls under load. Reinstall them one by one, and repeat the checking, etc.

Also, what range of frequencies you set the kernel at?

I also notice you've installed a lot of account plugins (haze, butterfly, salut). Do you turn them on all the time?

While you're at it. What is your firmware version?
