My guess is that its a gstreamer issue more than anything.

On my Unix desktops I don't run Gnome (except for a once or twice a year reminder as to why I don't) for a reason. Most everything I want to do has a lighter, more efficient, better working, alternative that is non-Gnome (and non-KDE) for that matter. As Gnome and KDE approach the complexity of MS Windows they gain the performance (or lack thereof) too.

I'm more or less willing to tolerate gnome on the tablet but its not an enthusiastic love affair by any means... and for playing music, I am deliberately bypassing gstreamer.

Basically, Canola is complicated, mPlayer is standalone. So it should run better in mPlayer. Are your videos converted?

in mplayer they run beautiful, but canola is excellent for music, so i wanted to have everything in one if it was possible.

Well, for the best performance, I recommend taking the time to convert them. (If you want them to work with Canola anyway)_
