Why's it need to be the same density as water? Can't we just mix up a batch of extra-heavy blood?

For maximum protection, it'd have to be the same density as the human body, or about the same as water. And it'd have to be breathable, so that it could support your airways from the inside.

But my point was to invent a heavy blood substitute (which is probably harder than a light breathable liquid), to bring the density of the body up to par... just a joke.

Damnit, I was going to point out The Abyss thing: one of my favourite pieces of movie trivia. Interestingly, some versions also cut it because "they" consider it animal cruelty - even though the rat was breathing, not drowning.

Huh. I remember watching the same demonstration on Beyond 2000, though I don't recall whether that was before or after The Abyss was released.

Perhaps it was before. If activists were that upset about the movie scene, I'd think television networks would have avoided the hate.

Both require a certain suspension of doubt in order to enjoy them, which I do tremendously, depressing reality be damned.

I understand the concept of "suspension of disbelief". A good fantasy should not remind you that you are doing so. I don't believe Iron Man did nearly as good a job at this as other comic book adaptations. I kept finding myself shaking my head. Strange as it may sound, I thought Hell Boy did a better job of it.

Yes, I am also familiar with Clarke's famous quote. I was saying that Clarke's Third Law doesn't work the other way around. Not all magic is indistinguishable from sufficiently advanced technology.

Hellboy gave you a big red man first hand. Of course to accept that you need to shut off reality checks early on ^^. honestly, if a story is nicely told, I have no problems on supending reality. Calvin and Hobbes for one. That kid had his shares of halloweens, but never grew a day older. XD

I think you're just straining too hard.

Yeah. That's the problem. I shouldn't have to strain at all.

You know what it is? Any movie that dares to show computer interfaces better do a damn good job of making it believable, otherwise I get cheezed off. And a 3D interactive interface is distant-future-magical; how does it know when you're "touching" something and when you're just "passing through"? etc, etc...
