I think only the wifi driver is closed source. There might be some stuff that is not implemented in newer kernel, and some user space changes might be neede, but other than the wifi everything is doable (and probably not very hard).

If you guys do the N800 Fremantle kernel, fanoush will have to do the Pimped Bootmenu or maybe set me up a driver for a PS/2 keyboard and mouse connected to my N800 through a USB adapter. I think it would probably be a variation on his serial keyboard drivers...

Great :-) Do we agree on the terms? Either which device I personally will get sooner or in case things go wrong (lost shipping, me being dead, me being crazy and delaying delivery, ...) we can count first developer we can find in Germany getting his/her tablet from developer program and first person we can find who gets Pandora from Evildragon's shop in Germany (both are sources I will use so it is good substitution). People getting devices in other countries (US, UK, whatever) do not count. In case there is no developer program the bet is void.

As for prizes
- if I win I get craves1 SD adapter for N810 including metal cover, it has to be the one that allows fitting accelerometer module but such module is not included in prize (if it materializes I will pay extra for it) If craves1 no longer makes the adapter I get usb2vga adapter with sis chipset
EDIT: if you'd better like to do something instead of material prize (did not think about it before but it makes perfect sense for you when thinking about it now) then I don't know, ideas? Will miss the adapter though ;-)

- if I lose I will deliver code we agree on below. I can accept only stuff I am fairly sure I can do

This is tricky one, I can't promise this since I am not sure I can make it. If we cannot find anything else I can only commit to best effort with unknown result (no dspgateway, possibly no audio for N800, ... anything)

Yes. Not sure how complicated this one is but this sounds doable. BTW what is current status? What exactly does not work? Are there any efforts in progress?

Not sure what this means exactly but anyway I'm not mplayer guy.

Definitely. Good choice :-)
  • text console usable with usb keyboard (770, N800,N810) + emergency shell prompt spawned from initfs
  • Mer version integration
  • serial usb gadget mode for emergency shell (directly usable with Hyperterminal/minicom, no usbnet needed)
  • colors for menu (bg,fg, active+nonactive+disabled text), maybe customized greeting somewhere
  • setting currently selected item as default one for next boot
  • automated building from garage svn to both deb and tar.gz version
Optional stuff I'm not sure anyone wants or is doable
  • setting r&d mode and other flags from menu
  • N810 builtin keyboard map for framebuffer console with usable FN key (i.e. numbers working) with stock kernel (i.e. no hacks for FN in kernel driver, just different map loaded with loadkeys or whatever)
  • not sure about bluetooth keyboard in intfs, is this really needed? Could be done in some console runlevel mode in real rootfs, not sure this is doable in emergency mode run from initfs EDIT: oh you said PS/2, then forget this one, should work with ps2->usb adapter

Anything else? See also ideas I had previously or add your own. I'd prefer kernel or shell hacking, not writing some UI (like UI side of bluetooth PAN for connecting more devices together)

BTW In case we have a bet I reserve the right to start on implementing that stuff sooner than pandora or next tablet ships and finish something even if I win :-) In case I lose I'm not sure if we should have some deadline for the code? Would one year be satisfactory? What about fine in case I do not deliver after deadline? -2500 karma?

Nobody should feel cheated that I promised something I'd do anyway even without the bet and also nobody should be discouraged from betting because of assumption that it will delay stuff to be done. Both assumptions are far from truth :-)

fanoush,

I will put something into a "fanoush is a super kernel hacker" kitty for you *whoever wins the bet*
Its no good having the new bits of hardware available without software support.

as for xv rotation problem, I created a small x11 xv test application to identify the problems, I'll reopload it and PM you later so you can see for yourself.

It just breaks when its rotated 90 or 270 degrees, plain and simple. 0 and 180 degrees works though and I've managed to get a 480*480 square showing correctly.
Its likely just a tweak ontop of the existing xrandr patch, but I still haven't built my own kernel (yes, I know I'm not a jedi yet!)

No, sorry, the WiFi driver is no longer closed.

I know about this driver but:

- Does it work completely - WEP, WPA, Ad-Hoc?
- Is it compatible with the current driver? Can you insmod this driver in diablo and the wireless work exactly as with the proprietary driver?

As far as I understand, the answer to all those questions is no.

fanoush: I would not be willing to purchase the craves1 kit or sis usb-vga for you and then ship it to you; I would be, however, willing to send you the required cash (via PayPal) for you to purchase and ship it yourself.

I would prefer to do something however, instead of pay something. But I'm not much of a coding Ninja, so I guess I'll have to bet the cash.

As for the terms, I liked my terms best of course, but if you insist on your terms, then I'd rather have the very personal version of the bet -- whichever device you personally get first. Photos, of course, will be required. And you should take a picture of something small that you own now (a toy car or foam penguin or something) and post it in this thread. Then when you get your Pandora or Nokia device, take a picture of that same toy beside the device and its box. Just as a kind of proof. Sure you can photoshop it, but I know you won't...

Getting money directly in not so much fun but OK. It may be easier this way if you feel so.

Got it. A bit later but got it. After all I offered 770 or other hardware too but I also felt that doing something is much more fun then just giving hardware or money and hoped noone will want the hardware.

Will post photo of something. Lets hope the Pandora vs Nokia shipping difference will be major (i.e. Pandora much sooner of course :-) so it doesn't matter much.

OK Is it a deal now or is some clarification needed like finalizing the list for me (or for you) to do?
