Now you're calling a wide screen aspect ratio landscape?

How do you hold the E71??
Wider edge in horizontal is the basic definition of landscape so yes, that would be my definition.

Most of the web (if you mean that by the internet) is actually orientated for landscape not portrait.
One of the raved about features of the original RIM handsets was that the secreen was wide enough to read emails and sms in a more 'natural' format. Most latin based charactersets are designed to be read in horizontal lines. Kanji is another debate altogether I'll grant you.
Terminal, try telling any serious user that portrait is preferable for that.
Again. And landscape will simply remain for those operations. Menus and Home screen don't have to be landscape.

Yeah. I thought you'd say that. thats why i added:

How do you hold the E71?? Can you not hold it with one hand any type? The new black berry bold 9700. is narrower than the old one for a reason.

The E71 is designed to be used two handed and a thumboard. If you can mange single handed typing on it other than a few characters then you are definately one in several million!

The bold is intended as primarily a voice device with occasional textual use. (See RIM product placement)

The most natural portrait oriented format that I can think of are.. wait for it...

Books and letters.

Landscape is no more natural for reading, unless you're talking about reading subtitles on a widescreen movie. What they're raving about, was mostly due to the pixel density : screen size that made reading things in portrait less desirable. We don't have this problem on N900. Even the iPhone/Touch with lower pixel density doesn't have this issue.

The E71 is the successor to the E61. why do you think these devices are getting narrower and narrower?

You're kidding me right? Bold is primarily a voice device? The number ONE selling feature of BlackBerry devices is the BB messenger and internet connection

I'm so tired of fanboys keeping saying that this is an internet tablet etc, and not a phone. In my country it's advertised as a phone. if you go to nokias european website http://europe.nokia.com/buy-online/n900-buynow you can see that first thing it says about it is "IT'S A PHONE".

I haven't ordered it from nokia store, I've ordered it from a carrier.
I know what I'll buy, and to be honest, nokia messed it up with this device. It can do so many cool things, but they ignored the simple and common things, like portrait for who wants a quick sms, etc.

I can't say I won't like it, but nokia lost a lot of people here, and this phone could of been much more of what it is now. It's a great device, but they've ignored the simple thing that we loved, like portrait mode, nokia maps, etc. ovi suite, the simple things that made NOKIA famous.

Most of you just defend it, without thinking that people which are complaining are actually right, I'm not saying that it's no good without those things, but we all are trying to say that with those thing it would of been even better.

Fargus and Corso85, Please keep the war else where would you?
I've read through 10 pages and all I see is you quoting one another for the sake of this incomplete N900. It's a good device but not great, and as for portrait mode, I believe most of us would love to have it whether NOKIA doesn't give a damn about providing it. But it is a dream of having something that can be use in both vertical and horizontal. I'm not defending anyone here, just common sense.

If they want it then it is them not some of you that do not wish to have it. If you don't want it please just don't use it or keep it to youself. And if you want it please just wait and stop fighting..If that day ever come then you'll get it.

There is no reason to be a fanboy here, since we all are here for the same reason. To learn and to help one another.

United we live, Separate we fall. Amen!!

The e71 is perfectly usable for typing one handed because of its word suggestion feature.

I haven't once said that portrait isn't a valid option. I have consistently argued that both have valid use cases but that the stated preference by the manufacturer for their envisaged case is landscape. The default for this device is landscape for various reasons. Just because some people want portrait doesn't mean the device is incomplete, merely not preferable for some.
