This thread just sounds so bitter
n900 - USB port falls out (Who says Nokia products are "Better Quality"?)
See what I did here.
So does using the bumper make things better?

I don't hold my N900s in "standard" ways, I guess. So all kinds of weird things happen -- I go into portrait mode when I'm holding the phone in landscape fashion. My fingers cover the gps antenna. Windows open when I'm not expecting them. When I'm typing my cursor jumps to funny places so I have to move to the right place again. Sometimes when I'm typing, messages close and I lose them.
But I take all this stuff for granted and don't bother mentioning it.
Should we have a long thread about different ways you can hold the N900 and the problems they can cause?

The cost difference is extemely tiny. Not even close to being a factor. Even so, it's worth it to head off inevitable return costs due to dislodged connectors, not to mention the bad word-of-mouth that results. In the case of hardware connectors, surface mount is just flat a bad idea.
Same for external antennas. I could have told Apple that. Anyone know what happens when you touch external, bare metal FM receiver antennae?

It's fundamentally a design error. Using surface mount connector in this case was a very poor choice.
As far as manufacturing issues, they weren't Nokia's. It's obvious the PCB supplier provided an inferior product for the motherboard. Copper plating should not remove so easily; looks like a bonding problem.
