My thoughts precisely. I'm generally optimistic about the technology but am aware of a one or two huge obstacles changing architectures. The high-spec'd OMAP 3430 looks to be comparable in capability, so the disadvantages of completely changing architecture may very well outweigh the hypothetical advantages of performance.
I think that this chipset may be NVidia's departure from strictly game-type devices. The device renderings on the Tegra site look more like PDAs and MIDs/ITs than portable gaming units. The same can be said about the demo apps. So although this technology seems poised to accomodate games well, I think it's marketed towards the general purpose handheld.
I'm very optimistic about the Tegra and will be watching it with enthusiasm. The one thing that it promises is competition to the current NITs and MIDs which can only mean more choices for the consumer!

I remember you're, like me, also one of the proponents of useful eyecandy (2D & 3D), so this might explain our enthusiasm a bit. The Tegra clearly has a big advantage in this environment. Question is, will OSes and programs fully utilize the hardware?
Just because the Tegra might not be aimed at Linux (there are tons of other, good embedded OSes out there BTW) doesn't mean it'll be a flop. It still might be an option for both people interested in using the NIT or current NIT users, and the competition argument is also still valid.

I'm with you. I haven't heard a big stir about WiMAX in Canada. Bell and Rogers have their "pre-WiMAX," but this certainly isn't going to be compatible with the N810w (it's not 802.16e). Other than that, I've only heard of small areas that have mobile WiMAX.
If there was some sort of timeline for affordable WiMAX service in Ontario, I would reconsider getting the N810w, and certainly advocate WiMAX for the N900.
I'm optimistic, but I'm not going to cry myself to sleep if it doesn't work out.

Perhaps we'll see the emergence of a 3D GUI toolkit (like GTK, QT, etc) rather than yet another 3D compositing window manager. This could make for some ultra-slick and fast performing applications. I'm imagining perfect zooms, resolution independent desktops, occlusion effects, smooth transition animations, and even assisted computation (for some programs) using the GPU.

Great link! To think that this software is *almost* a port away for the tablet. I'm glad that you brought it to the community's attention. I certainly didn't know about this toolkit, and I'm betting that some others don't know of it as well.

Umm, Clutter is an old project and used in almost all MIDs on the market We just don't have 3D

The N810 is an amazing device that continues to evolve. I would like to see further development of Skype and MSN software, with video support, and sync with Microsoft Outlook contacts and calendar. I would also like to see an unlocked SIM card facility. Above all, better volume on the integrated OS media player will be essential – at the moment, you just can’t hear it on a plane or train.
