If your device has a German keyboard layout I'd be happy to buy your device. Not that I'd need a second one, but chances are that this will cut you from complaining about the same thing over and over. I counted a rough 48 postings on this topic from you in this thread...

You might as well wait though until maemo or a ported symbian app will provide exactly what you want. The choice is yours.

Hi,

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with my problem of not being able to set up MfE on my N900. Being a non-techie, I have gone through most of the posts on this thread related to the issue and have done some homework before posting my problem. The details are:

Device firmware: PR 1.1
Exchange Server: 2007, with a self signed certificate; non-provisional devices are allowed

Error: Either exchange server requires secure connection or account disabled

Trials:

1. I have tried to install the certificate by copying it onto the device using Firefox on the PC, in .pem format, .p7b format and even in .p7c format. I copied this file onto the device. On the device, when I use file manager and click on the certificate file, it asks me to choose a program to run it. I select certificate manager, however the install option does not come up. It just gives me the details of the certificate. I thought it could be because it might not have a CA field. However, the details look like:

Issued to: ABCD (Name changed)
Issued by: ABCD
Valid from: gives the date
Valid to: gives the date
Fingerprint(SHA1): gives some alphanumeric characters (40 in all, excluding spaces)

So it seems it does have the CA too as it gives something for 'Issued by' field (Am I correct?). Still I'm not able to install the certificate.

I have tried to lookup in the /ssl-ca directory on the x terminal too. However, there are no certificates installed there too. Else, I could have followed someone's instructions to symlink it to /activesync directory.

What can I try now?? It seems to be a certificate issue to me. I tried to install the certificate on a PC in my office too, but in the end it gives a warning saying that the certificate has an unconfirmed thumbprint (screenshot attached). Is there any way I can make the MfE work for this server?

The MfE works fine if I configure email of another company within my employer group. That one is an unsecured server though.

The "Issued by" field is not the same as the CA field. If you look at the certificate in Firefox, the "Certificate Basic Constraints" section needs to say "Is a Certificate Authority".

Thanks Rob1N; I checked the certificate. It says "Is not a Certificate Authority". Does this mean there is no workaround for me to get my MfE on the phone? Or can I try something else?

As far as I know, there's no way to use that certificate with MfE on the N900.

Can I still configure the email on POP?? When I try to do it, it gives me an SMTP authentication error, even though I can access the POP account from my laptop at home.

I've no idea - if this is using the same certificate, then maybe not (I don't know how the POP/SMTP setup is done or what checks it makes on certificates).

I bet there are numerous services out there offering free SSL certificates.
I got mine from StartSSL. Though it's only issued for 1 year it helped me to sort out my former certificate issues. Best thing: it's free (at least for 1 year).

LOL. I went back to my unlocked iphone and have to say what an eye opener for corporate email. Everything works flawlessly and this is not a WinMo device but apple OS that is able to communicate with my exchange server, with no provisioning issues, great search function and great display.

My N900 does not have German keyboard. I will keep it until next firmware update. If no provisioning by then, it will be a dinosaur anyways with all the new stuff coming out........for me to wait further.

Be glad you don't have a pre-3GS iPhone and a company policy requiring device encryption, then (which worked by lying up until OS 3.1, when capability reporting was corrected and the older devices not supported any more). But as stated above, Nokia has heard your complaint and by dragging it up here once a week you do nothing but annoy people.
