Still in devel. ... is one thing.
Released... is again...one thing.

whether :
A- it meets the highly questionable stated abilities
B- it has adequate support in the short and long term
and
C- Outside the lab, what issues it will have in the real world..
how many...
whether timely fixed,
resolvable or not ...

are a completely other thing.

for example..
The Pinto was released to the consuming public.

for me...
it isn't a case of being jaded or wary...
or once burned twice shy...

It is plain and simple rational pragmatism ..
Until the final "real world" trials are done,
and the verdict in after extensive reviews ,
I don't buy any load of propaganda...
not one dram..
from anyone

yes...indeed.
the price point WITH modem and sim slot is bad enough..
The price point without is ...extreme...for a tablet.

The price point almost makes sense considering the "stated" abilities...and if it included standard telephony bits...
but without...it is a steep price...

and I am afraid I still can't shake off the stated os's it can run...
half of which are most clearly and obviously not out of devel. yet...
So how on earth would they know the stated os's run on their device...I mean ...really?!?

that bit bothers me...a lot.

it reminds me of the breakthrough in room temperature cold fusion..
the "claims" they made..
I am sure it is doable ...
some time in the future...
but not yet...

Likewise openly predicting os's not even out of devel running on a device ..
that kind of accurate forecasting may happen some day in the future...
but it isn't here yet.
and likewise...
the "claims" being made..

I say...(and completely honestly ...toward any endeavor at all )..
show me.
So...in this case..
show me a video of these claimed completed, ready to run os's...
running on the device.
Not the "beta" stage of the os's (as some are most definitely still in...as stated by their own devels...)...either.
Show me a video of these claims...
Show me as well a "manufacturer's guarantee" statement that ships with every device, that there will be support for a stated period of time, in case of necessary recall or parts or breakage or whatever...where there is help to get one's device operational again...
It needn't be for a crazy number of years...
If any mom and pop store can do a 30 day, 90 day, 1 year limited warranty ...
then surely anyone can.
But forking out any kind of coin nowadays on anything, I want to know...
A- that it will perform as claimed.
B- that support is more than just making the device and shipping it out.

Jesus endsor, nobody is claiming these things are ready or suitable for joe consumer.

You can order the device without any OS at all! or with the screen detatched. does that sound like a consumer thing to you?

No. this is closer to a raspberry pi in the form factor of a phone, which people have tried to accomplish with actual raspberry pis so maybe theres a market for something like that

This sounds to me to be targeted toward developers that need a device. This could make for a great device to work on multiple OS on.

This is not a device for me, so I don't look at the price or features as crazy since it not on my radar.

Fair enough. Let me ask you, then. Are YOU going to buy it? Or anyone else justifying the price as "not that bad"?

I never said that, I just offered up a possible explanation as to why the price is so high. I don't think they just pulled out iPhone prices for the sake of it.

No I won't be ordering one, but sometimes this place is just an endless tirade of why they won't be buying a thing because it's too big / small / hot / cold, or anything other than just right.

Yes it's expensive, but maybe something better will come out of it

Care to elaborate? I haven't the foggiest which product you are referring to. To my knowledge there is no product, announced or released, with similar specs and a similar price tag.

However, I do know about:
- an announced product with slightly better specs and half the price tag, and
- an announced product with much better specs and an unknown price tag, and last and definitely least,
- an announced product with much worse specs and slightly lower price tag... that's highly unlikely to ever see the light of day

I hear you. But I believe so should the people running the project. It is far too easy to dismiss such voices as "ignore them, they are just picky whiner who are never happy" and plough on because you know better. Then, by the time you've found out that no one bought your product, it may be too late to realize that maybe, just maybe, you should have listened to those "picky whiners".

Let's hope so. Or it may end up as yet another failed project.

A failed project is a failed project. In a year's time no one will care why it failed. Whether it was because it was a bad design or just a wrong price, choice of name or colour scheme. The end result is the same.

I agree, but likewise the picky whiners need to judge a thing for what it is, rather than what they wish it was.

This particular device, at this stage, seems to be more targeted towards companies who may want to develop a product based upon open hardware. Like these XXLSec guys who are using this device for some super secure tactical equipment thing, maybe even Jolla could buy one just to see how sailfish would work on it or show off at trade shows.

So for this you get a blank slate hardware, with working linux kernel, and the rest is up to you.

I don't know what the deal with between Necunos and Nemo, LuneOS et al is, but if they offered those communities discounted or free hardware then I think that's worthy of a little good will towards them.
