My Easy Mer is a hack job where I run Mer in a Maemo chroot, to get the best of both worlds until Mer has all of the missing low-level pieces (sound, power management, etc). The battery / wlan status applets (probably) won't work if you're booting to Mer instead of chrooting to it, since they depend on Maemo daemons to be running.
EDIT: I've posted the little python programs here, but you need the battery-status package to check your battery, and that probably doesn't work in Mer.

First off, thank you for all the work you guys have put into this.
After reading this thread, I figured I'd dig out and dust off my tablet and try installing Mer.
Following the instructions on the Wiki, I'm not sure what to do next, as it doesn't seem to work for me.
I installed Mer to the internal SD card slot of my n800 and the appropriate .item file is present in the bootmenu.d directory.
When I reboot my tablet, it just boots back into OS2008.
If I re-run the Bootmenu application and hold down the menu button during boot it brings me to the boot device selection screen. If I chose the internal card option, it just says it can't read it and then defaults to the internal memory.
Has anybody else had this issue?

I also would like to say a big thank you to the people involved in this project. It is definately a huge undertaking and I would ask those testing the software to be patient with the developers as they work to resolve your issues as well as to further develop the operating system.
I've read the wiki but what I could not find is a list of what benefits can be had from moving from maemo to Mer. As Mer is in development I do not expect that there are many right now, however is there a list of expected outcomes that you (developers) hope to present at the time of full release. Perhaps someone can point me to it.

There are two primary benefits of a mature Mer project:
(1) An open-source, Linux kernel, Maemo-compatible distribution that is not controlled by nor dependent on Nokia and can be easily ported to many different platforms and processors, allowing users to run a Maemo-compatible, mobile-oriented Linux distribution on various different hardware platforms.
(2) A platform that is compatible with Maemo 5 (Fremantle) and the current Ubuntu distribution, with current libraries, yet runs on older hardware (770, N800, N810). This will allow owners of older hardware to run "backported" versions of Maemo 5 software, as well as Ubuntu applications such as OpenOffice.
