Im reasonably happy with my N900, however it cant be denied that Nokia repeatedly mentioned that a firmware update would come in December/at the end of the year. It was pretty much promised. I can appreciate a delay can happen, as is the way of the world - however Im not sure why people seem to deny it was repeatedly mentioned MMS would come with the next firmware update.

Is there somewhere a statement why Nokia does not release such a beta firmware to the interested public? Like a special extras-devel for firmware snapshots.
I mean they gave out this firmware to some people for testing and filing bug-reports, but why not use the vast interested community for that. Would probably a win-win-situation.
Most of the end-users wouldn't notice it and all the people here would be happy.

Really Maemo is open and all, but if Nokia made the "beta fw" update available even just for Maemo.org community we would have 90% of people here complaining about crashed applications, restarting N900 and what not. It would backfire nicely to Nokia direction afterll this is internetz and people will hear about it and find way to update the N900 even if Nokia tried to limit it.

When Nokia announce anything like releasing firmware at the end of Dec...it actually means 2 or 3 months after that....they always delay things and they are never trustworthy. Those that have gone through the release of the N900 knows what i am talking about.

I just don't want web application to suddenly shut down due to internal error, the maps application to be actually useful and not laggy, a proper fb and twitter client.
Yes, developers can make some too, but look at HTC, its all integrated in a contact seemlessly. Nokia should learn from them

In fact if I read the announcement correctly this was Nokia's compromise to the community asking for a "publically" available firmware testing. Nokia doesn't want to send it out easily before it's ready.. but was willing to select a few of the "community" to give it to just to see what kind of real-world scenario's cause problems.
Does it suck waiting for firmware updates to fix problems on your device you bought? Yes of course. But this problem exists in all devices. People screamed the G1 sucked until Cupcake... which took a while. But now I don't even think the G1 will get Donut, and myTouch/Cliq I don't think will get Eclair. At least, not without root.
Such is life.
