Thanks for the info. I tried installing ms tt core fonts and it failed, had tried abiword and it did the blank screen thing, so I removed it and will do the Squeeze workaround later, but in the meantime I've got all these packages apt-get keeps telling me autoremove can take care of. Was thinking I might just blow the image away since all I really care about are OO, Gnumeric and R (which works like an absolute dream, let me tell you!). These last two installed perfectly, so I'm done experimenting.

Apropos autoremove: I noticed that there is one package in the new image which apt-get says could be removed by apt-get autoremove: libdrm2. Is there a reason to keep it?

It's an open-source interpreter for the S language. Very very powerful statistical programming environment (I'm an econometrician). Data exploration, file reshaping, fuzzy data file joins, statistical analysis, you name it.

So the power key trick works reliably even when the "Fix LXDE keyboard" fails? Can you confirm that? Then we should perhaps say so in the wiki where the two possibilities are mentioned on a par.

I have tried OO outside of LXDE but it is not, as of yet, set up the way I like. I like the Debian LXDE so I alway open OO from there.

xterm is on my maemo screen. It is just an xterminal.


Also, I repeated the phone test and, again, the Fix LXDE keyboard did not fix the problem. But the "trick" worked. So either I messed things up or they are different.

mscion: "Fremantle" is the code name for Maemo 5, the OS that runs on the N900. "Diablo" is the code name for Maemo 4.1, the OS that runs on the N800 and N810 (the N8x0) tablets.

I'll look into the Fix LXDE keyboard problem. Who wants to bet it is a localisation problem?

I tried your suggestion.

Unfortunately this problem did not provide evidence in favor of "su -"

It would be good to try it yourself to verify.
