To me the USB port looks no different.

However there are three other changes.
The slider merchanism is a lot more secure.
The stylus is a LOT stiffer
The keyboard surround is more secure.

I think I will definately file the prongs on my mains sharger. That has by far the most aggressive grip in the socket and it was when removeing that charger that the socket came out too.

No sign of manufaturing date beneath the battery BTW

One thing to note too upon the return of your N900.

Mine had the old 2009 firmware installed. I only noticed today and when I did an update check it did not prompt me to install the new version. Instead I had to pick it from the applications list.

I wished I had noticed this before my restore Still I am running the upgarde now and if it causes issues i will just flash it later today.

filing or compressing the prongs of the data cable and charger is reaaly a good idea. as for me, the usb port of my n900 already has its wear and tear for the first 2 weeks before i learned of this issue. i am plugging and unplugging chargers and calbles witth force. sometime i accidentaly snap the usb port for the reason i do not know.

when i heard about this issue, i immediately searched for a preventive tactics. i got the filing thing and did that in about 2mins.

so far, for 3months, im using the n900 without any issues. but keeping an eye and taking good care of it

EDIT: no manufacturing date? oh thats fine.

i believe what you got is a replacement of a new device. if you happen to compare the serial numbers of the devices you returned and was returned to you, we might know

goodluck on updating.

As far as I am aware the company in the UK that looks after the repair process for Nokia only replaces with refurbished/returned phones. It is highly unlikely that anybody would recieve an entirely new device.

I have just posted a complaint email to Nokia Europe. Apparently my phone is in a care centre "somewhere" abroad, waiting for exchange, but there's no stock. Since 2 weeks there's no stock, may be even longer! My patience is gone.
I have urged them to resolve the situation by the end of next week, and tbh with you guys Nokia has truly ruined the n900 for me. Will *most likely* demand my money back and move somewhere else. Never thought it would get this far

so there its posible to be a repair, or it is really a repair.

being that said, this really confuses me. in past years, i've returned at least 2 nokia devices. at my eyes, they set aside my faulty device, get a new one unopened (they do require the whole package with accessories and i returned it in a nokia care center) and gave it to me. i do not know what happened. they just take my device and gave me a new one that only took an hour.

2 weeks....why wouldn't nokia just order in some other branches of devices or parts? i believe it wont take that long, or maybe, they are fulled up of customers returning their n900 devices.

I'm assuming that my device is sitting in some repair centre somewhere in Europe, they have decided to replace it and are now waiting for a refurb they can return to me. That's what I'm thinking. Quite frankly, I'm getting more and more agitated after weeks of waiting.

I know you siad I needed to show a bit more patience but I think you need to show a bit more annoyance and impatience towards Nokia.

It is becoming clear that they are now replacing our N900s that encounter this problem, therefore there is no reason for that process to take any more than 5-10 days at the very maximum.

If they do not have a re-furb/replacement phone in stock then they should get a new one shipped to you immediately.

However given that they have already had your money and the demand for the N900 is still outstripping supply they would rather sell any phones they have than use them to replace broken ones. Simple sales led business policy on display. The only way to get some attention is to make some noise IMHO, the longer you wait the more they will let you wait until you crack, which it sounds like you have. Then any remedial work they do may be too late.

For what it's worth I got to your state after 1 week (yes i am impatient) and was boiling by week 2. However having an imaculate replacement N900 back in my possesion melted away all that hurt in seconds. I may well now burn my N95 8gb as I hated going back to it that much :O

Hope it gets sorted for you to your satisfaction
John

if this helps any how, on the 4th I wanted to buy an N900 from a different carrier but I wasn't sure if it worth it. on the 5th when I decided to buy it, it was out of stock, and they are getting new ones on the 24th. I think that Nokia recalled all of their phones to be sure the usb thing won't happened again. Because Denmark and Finland are pretty close, no poi for 20 days to restock. Anyhow I've sent an email to Nokia Denmark to ask them about the problem, and to ask them if they are going to repair it under warranty in case that happens to me.
Also, those from the EU, you could make a complain to your customer protection authority giving as evidence other people who's phones were repaired (because there's the same law in the EU for customer rights and the same warranty). also, if you can't handle this true your local authority. Nokia is an Finish company, so you can complain to the EU customer rights authority, which basically handles this type of complains made about companies in other countries. I think this is their website http://ec.europa.eu/food/dyna/az_index_ca_en.cfm#M not sure, just google it. I needed them a while ago concerning a plane ticket and boy were they fast an efficient. Complained Thursday, Friday it got to the authorities in the other state, Monday it was solved.
