WTF am i still writing about Apple vs Nokia.

Both units are in different worlds.

It really shows how dumb this thread really is.

I look at it this way if the itouch had a better screen and bluetooth maybe I would like it more.

I hate companies that sucker people in all day. SONY, APPLE,

Look at PS3 hype with no good games... LOL most powerful? LOL
and I dont own a ps3 or xbox360.........

Microsoft did what they said.... Sony? Not.

Apple create a cool device but thats so did Samsung, LG, HTC, Sharp Zuars, Nokia,

Apple selling SDK kits for 100$ OMG so you can build open source code?
Open source means free right?

Their a joke. Also when Iphone sales did crappy they said it was ATT.

No it was not it was a 699$ unit with 4GB of space and a 2 year contract with minual data /voice plan.

Add it up 24 months

I bought the N810 to be a mobile internet companion, however in my use the iPod Touch has provided a better experience for my purposes. For the uber Linux pros out there, I'm sure the N810 is a wonderful device for you, but I suppose I was mislead into thinking it was a mobile companion and multimedia device.
well nothing wrong with the idea. But the problem is that you just highlighted the advantages of the touch over the n800 and you are entirely entitled to do that. and so are we. For you a mobile device is more of a portable media player, but remember everyone doesnt need to think so. so that is where we come in. we also put in the advantage of the n800 just that everyone knows what are the advantages of the n800/n810 also.
Well this discussion will always bring the apple hate because apple
really tries to dictate customers. Why do people always hate 2 companies more .. ........ Apple & microsoft?
As much as some people love apple some also hate it because of the companies policy. You really have to take that into consideration during the discussion.
On the contrary i havent heard of many people hating nokia or blackberry............ why?
so a discussion of company and its policies are relevant here.

I thought the N810s keyboard was great, and I wouldn't settle with anything less. If I could type just as fast on the iPod Touch, I would have taken it right back to the store, fortunately they did a great job engineering the keyboard and it works just as well as the N810's.
Well the OSk on the touch may predict the next letter, but i think the osk on the n800 is even better because it predicts the next word! I have used this a lot and it is really useful. What is more important is that i type in different languages and it remembers those also. Now i just input the first two letters and i just make a tap.....viola i just wrote "Dissatisfaction" with three clicks.
Does the touch have this (i seriously dont know.)
And coming to the thumb keypad. the letters are far bigger than the osk on the touch and even in the thumb keypad there is word completeion.

Who wants to have to get out a little pencil to tap tiny icons on their screen? The whole UI is designed with a stylus in mind making it cramped and generally ugly. Apple had to innovate and test its UI design a lot to make the entire thing not only as effectively navigable than a UI designed with a stylus in mind, but better.
Well you may like your finger but i like my stylus. the other day i was using the iphone and was trying to select a poll option on a forum. I had to tap three times before i got to the level of zoom to click the circle highlighting my choice. And even then i could not accurately click on it with my finger. Definitely there are advantages of having both. The stylus has its own uses. Many games are useless without the stylus. I play tennix and the lbreakout2 game on my n800. try playing them without a stylus?
I think the introduction of the stylus just needs a very small amount of space to include it. Well if you dont like to use the stylus you dont need to..... but i think the option of using it or not should be given.
Just look at the sketch application, the handwriting. well they all need the stylus.
So just finger navigation is not everything.

I think Apple's OSk has a few key advantages that I think should be replicated in other handheld devices. I ask you to put your bias (against the brand name, looks, Apple Inc, etc) aside for a second and just to see these as a new concept\technology\idea:

1). Dynamically sizeable key active areas: The active area for the keys do not always correspond to the on-screen display, although that's the default behaviour, but it can readjust the 'landing zone' according to the best prediction derived from the active dictionary(ies). ie: When the user has typed T-I-M... the active area for the letter 'E" will be enlarged (at the cost of nearby keys: W, S, D, F, R).

2). Auto correction with support for multiple languages (ie: You can select English, French and German dictionaries to be active simultaneously)

3). Alternate keys to be displayed on hold: Everyone already has seen that on the iphone\itouch when you hold your finger down on a key it will show an enlarged display of said key above your finger. On some keys, this feature is extended to show multiple selections (ie: show accented characters for a, e, i, o). A good feature to give easy access to lesser used keys on cramped display space.

Sachin007: You might want to reconsider branding things as 'X is even better than Y' when you 'seriously don't know about' Y. (quoted from your own post). And I agree that 'discussion about companies and their policies are irrelevant here', although I don't understand why you also ***** about certain company 'dictating their own customers' on the same post

But please help me understand this....

When the n800 can predict a whole new word instead of predicting the next letter how can the apple's osk be better when it just predicts the next letter?
For example if i just input ti...... immediatly a list of words come in th e bottom half .... time times title and tiny. Now which one is better?

Well if i knew everything then we would'nt be having this discussion. THis discussion is exactly that. I am ready to learn from you. But i have seen all the press releases of the iphone and also used it a litttle. But as far as i can remember i did not see the particular feature on the iphone. SInce i dont use the iphone as much as you guys do i was just confirming whether that feature is there or not.

I have always said that discussion about companies policies are highly relevant here(i did not say irrelevant!!) Of course when you tout the advantages of the touch you should also include that apple will definitely charge for many apps and even for firmware updates. wheras from nokia you just buy your device everything else is free(except for the navigation for which there are free alternatives also)

So company policies are also relevant here and should be discussed.

sachin007: the full-word auto-correction feature is the one I listed as item #2. That one has been around on just about all mobile devices nowadays (including cellphones, even the cheap ones). The Apple implementation improves upon it by letting you enable multiple dictionaries simultaneously, also adding entries from your contact list, and also it learns new words by adding it to a dynamically maintained dictionary (lesser used words will expire after a certain inactive period).

But, point #1 is the seldom known feature of the Apple OSK that is a good bit of sw engineering that Benz145 (and myself) tried to illustrate to you. The effect is very subtle. It's not visible, it doesn't show or hint at the next available letters visually, but it increases your chance of hitting the right letter according to active dictionary(ies).

So, to answer your repeated question, Yes, the apple keyboard can do full-word auto-completion, on top of predicting your next key input.
