I actually was a bit shocked that nobody has commented on that message before, too. To me, it is a dead giveaway and it must have been in the wild long before the leaked Rover specs.

I'm also surprised my discovery didn't make a bigger splash on tmo. Perhaps everyone is sure that we have a phone already, or maybe I should have chosen a less high-traffic thread, or maybe I should have started a new thread? I can still do that... Should I?

I don't think it has anything to do with Skype or other VoIP services; VoIP providers usually give disclaimers about not providing emergency call (ie 9-1-1) capability.

I clicked on it... It just asks you for your "lock code" (and gives you a big touchscreen numeric keypad) and I have no idea what that code is.

I'm guessing it is a connection status widget. The fact it starts with "connui" tells me that it is directly tied to the connection manager, and I think it tells you stuff like provider, connection type, and signal strength.

My impression: almost everyone following this stuff is probably sure that at least one Maemo 5 device will be a phone, and the squabbling has moved on to whether or not there's also going to be a Maemo 5 unphone.

I just want to know when the thing is coming out. My touchscreen is going bad and I don't want to get an 810 only to have the new joint come out right after.

My opinion: it's not coming out for a long time. Buy the N810 -- you'll love it. (Mind, it's not a phone!)

My impression is that the new device will not be marketed as a voice phone, only that it has HSPA connectivity.

Our community will grow as a bunch of hacks are developed and folks in harbored and segregated markets like the US and Canada will find all kinds of uses for the thing.

Nokia gains presence without having to get into an exclusive agreement with any one carrier.

Edit: BTW, whatever happened to >> THIS << kind of thinking.

Benson, I think you've coined a good term there, better than Tablet: the "Maemo unphone" ... or we could just start calling it

The unPhone

Look what I just found in the SDK! It's under "Settings / Restore original settings" if you want to see for yourselves.

I guess this is confirmation that we're getting a phone, eh?

EDIT: More confirmation from the SDK!

When starting up the desktop, I see this error:

Code:
hildon-home[2930]: GLIB WARNING ** default - /usr/lib/hildon-desktop/connui-cellular-operator-home-item.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Interesting... A "cellular operator home item," eh?
qole...Just sent your post in to Engadget.

Because it was already announced that Maemo 5 would have GSM *data* support; such things require some aspect of carrier access.

Just because a device as GSM *data* access doesn't make it a phone; but it *can* make it a device that a carrier will sell to improve ARPU numbers.

Engadget is the National Enquirer of the tech world. It's like that dog on your street that drops his ball at your feet. You pick it up only realise it is sticky with the stupid mutt's slobber.
