Hi. When the N8x0 is performing normally, is it possible to do some kind of "apt-get dist-upgrade" in order to get the updates installed instead of reflashing and losing all settings, not saved data,... ?

It is certainly possible to do "apt-get dist-upgrade". I don't think that will necessarily upgrade everything the same way reflashing does, but after the last OS release I compared the package versions I had against those in the release and they all seemed to match the new release anyway. The claimed reason for that release was fixes to the boot code: I would think that won't have been updated by apt-get but I haven't experienced problems booting so I didn't bother reflashing.

But I'd disagree with your assertion that reflashing loses settings: so long as you have a recent backup which you can restore you shouldn't lose any settings or data. You may lose applications if they aren't installable through the package system, but once you reinstall them you should still have any settings. You will also lose any customisations you make to system files, but most people whont have those.

and would this intefere with the map program?

Also, from a GPS producer's FAQ: "You may get fixes much better out of a window facing South than a window facing North. Again, this has to do with where the satellites are in the overhead sky."

OK guys, sorry to bump an old topic, but...

I installed the patch. The default map application isn't seeing any improvement and Maemo Mapper can't even talk to the GPS at all (the GPS icon will flash on and off sometimes, and Mapper says that it can't find the GPS).

Help?

The patch was for gpsd and was only useful for the one month. The time of day & date that gpsd returns is not overly important (unless you're trying to set a clock by it).

I'd uninstall the patched version as it interfered, iirc, with adding other software (dep problems).

I saw this too, but wasn't sure if it was down to the patched gpsd. Perhaps it is. In the end I'd have to run the Map application (for which the gps would turn on), then run maemo-mapper to use the gps once it was up and running.

I think removing the patch is the best bet, this problem won't affect you for another 4 years (leap year bug), and by then I trust we'll have an officially patched version

The Diablo is about to hit the streets soon (2Q08... and no, it doesn't have to be the last day of 2Q...) and we'll get the A-GPS support that supposed to improve the performance greatly. I'm running Diablo and have this A-GPS app installed. However, sometimes it seem like help a lot but sometimes I do not notice much if any improvement. (But I have not really used it much... I rarely need the GPS and map.) Maybe someone else who has Diablo and A-GPS app have more experience?

Another detail I remember that in the "beginning" there was some A-GPS data stored into a file in the internal memory card... but lately that file does no longer exist. Has anyone else seen that too?
