The most dangerous enemy of every developer is his own ego... I know I'm going to regret this once people's devices are getting messed up by that abomination...

Create/Edit and Delete are fully functional by now (icons can be choosen from a file dialog with previews, already existing folders can be selected from a simple list). Still thinking about how to implement adding applications to folders in the most stable way.

And as for the last tab (the unholy "replace hildon.menu" tab), that one will get one big, fat, red, flashing (does QT have flashing text? ) warning and three "are you sure" dialogs...

Looks great! Hope to see it in extra-devel soon.

Looks great indeed. So so far this is a separate program, not a plug-in to Applications Menu? And by plug-in I mean that "Manage Apps to folders" would appear when you've pressed long enough on Applications Menu (the Hildon rearrange-thingy).

And I have a minor suggestion for future releases, if you can find out how to do it : add "Use current themes icons" which would bring up icons from that theme, if there is any (e.g. an-DROID has it's own icons for Catorise).

I look forward to giving it a try and then re-flashing my N900

I wonder is it possible to make openssh a requirement to install? At least that way anyone who screwed it up would be able to get back in and delete/modify hildon.menu to get a functioning phone again. Or maybe a "recoverable" version with ssh and a "your on your own if you screw it up" version.

On second thought, even if you bork the menu, ctrl-shift-x will bring up terminal and you can delete hildon.menu and reboot, right?

Seriously, looks like this could be a great little app to have.

The problem is that you can bork the menu enough to cause the watchdog to force a reboot, after which you're stuck in a reboot loop. You can probably use R&D mode to get out of that one, but I've not tried - I went to the trouble last time of putting my menu files into MyDocs, so I could access them in mass storage mode. Unfortunately the security changes in PR1.2 mean that won't work any more.

Ahhh, OK, wasn't sure. I did that once on PR1.1, but it was transitions.ini that got borked, not the menu. Got stuck in the reboot loop, finally caught it by connecting to computer and hitting mass storage mode, which suspended the loop. ssh'd in, fixed transitions.ini, rebooted and menu was fine. I've messed up the menu a couple times in PR1.2, but not enough to hit the watchdog (or fixed it quick enough).

You don't happen to know what it takes to mess up the menu in that way, so I could try to prevent this from happening (simply by not offering that kind of modification )?

I would like to keep SSH out of the big picture, so the less tech savvy won't have to delve too much into the inner workings. I'll include information on how to get things running again (one of them simply being to leave the application running and hitting the deactivate button in case anything went wrong), and I would prefer to keep the worst case scenario at Ctrl-Shift-x level.

I think it was just malformed XML last time I had it happen. That certainly should be preventable (or at least less likely to happen) using an app than manually editing.

very interested to see how you come out with this.

I've setup my app launcher with folders just the way I like several different ways, but any time i mod hildon.menu, cpu usage ramps up to about 4% at idle. No big deal, but it pulls on the battery overnight.

guess i can make some "Good-Night" and "Good-Morning" scripts but it shouldn't be that way.

are you far enough along to see if this bumps up hildon-desktop activity at idle?
