Why the complaints about lack of support?

The older symbian phone users must have been *****ing last month..."Great - just bought my Nxx and now Nokia bring out N900 and Maemo...won't be seeing any updates for my phone now"
Then today - "Oh free Maps - maybe Nokia does love its old customers still..."

On the N900 front - we've had two firmware updates already this month. How can that be lack of support?

The N900 has been marketed primarily towards developers rather than normal consumers. I wouldn't expect all the same things as standard consumers would get. Although to be honest I'd be surprised if we don't see Maps on the N900 soon.

but then who will buy sygic?

they said they were "workin together" in the past days, im afraid we were "sold" to sygic as part of the agreement.
two friends of mine are waiting for iphone 4 i was convincing them to buy the n900 instead. now i stopped. maybe i should start convincing them to buy my own n900...

Mmm. Yeah, I am not saying that the N900 sales are in the past nor the device, I am saying that the planning for the N900 sales and device was in the past.

Nokia did put in a plan and actual work to bring the Ovi Maps version we got to a new platform, the Maemo 5 platform. From whatever they started out with.

They would not have planned like that and put resources like that into the software package if they ment to replace it after 3 months.

Now they're pushing the Sygic nav package. They would not have done that if they had planned to replace the Ovi Maps package after 3 months.

Being surprised and enraged by the lack of a major Ovi Maps upgrade now is... Well...

Don't get me wrong. I think it's is completely legimate to be surprised and enraged about the quality of the Ovi Maps version they DID plan to give us. I just don't think you can expect them to pull a new version out of the Maemo sleeve just yet.

If Nokia wanted to give us Flash 10 but couldn't get it ready in time, they would tell us. And they did. It made people buy the device. If Nokia wanted to give us a free upgrade to better navigation software, they would have told us. It would have made people buy the device.

Now they have planned to give free navigation software to the next generation of Maemo devices. And they have already told us. It will make people buy the device.

The N900 being the flagship product/highend product will be a key part of the Nokia portfolio. Support of Maemo ovi maps navigation will benefit future sales - even as yet the N900 is in its infancy.
What I was trying to say (I should should have made it clearer) in the first sentence is that Nokia may be considering the N900 is in the past because the Nokia V.P. has said:

"N900 owners shouldn't hold their breath, though, as Nokia is focusing on bringing its free navigation service to the next generation of Maemo devices. That's not to say that the N900 won't get it eventually, only that it's not currently on the roadmap."

Before Nokia start talking about the next version of maemo they should be concentrating on the current version and supporting it. One obvious way is to release the free version of ovi maps on the n900.

If Nokida are "focusing" on the "next generation of maemo devices" then logically they are not focusing on the current version!

The opposite should have been said:
"Nokia are focusing on the current generation of maemo devices...
..eventually the next generation will get it and is on the roadmap"

This is what I meant by the n900 as the past and maemo 5 as legacy.

I personally do not believe that but Nokia seem to leaning this way.

Considering the number of devices that Nokia make, plans being made are always about the future. Whatever work they do for the current existing devices is support. Bugfixing, or bringing functionality that marketing already promised but they failed to deliver on time.

Maemo can be said to be different in that respect. Because it's this much of an open platform, all the work they do for the M6 generation of devices may (or may not) be easily backported. If they want a blooming community around Maemo, they will be willing to put in some extra effort in backporting.

So essentially, the N900 may never have voice guidance navigation. Sweet. Nokia did it again.

Sure I agree with that, I was mainly responding to your translation of Nokias thoughts in your last comment:

Once its been sold..

Guys, look what I found on Nokia`s discussion forum:

"Brilliant Announcement by Nokia well done.!
Well that depends what you mean by the "NEW" ovi maps.... The "free" stufff is the old Ovi maps. Navteq the actual map maker has a new collection of maps that will most likely be the "premium" map software.

http://corporate.navteq.com/webapps/...glishonly=true

So for Nokia the question is why just retire ovi maps 3 when it can give it away for free and make a huge impact.

NOW FOR ALL THE N900 MOANERS out there...have you looked at OVI Maps 1.0 after the '51' update? Have you plotted a route? We do it and goto "directions" what do you see...TURN by TURN Navigation.
OVI maps on N900 is 97% done, all that needs to happen is a speech synthesiser integrated that can read those directions. Trust me we will see ovi maps with functional turn by turn navigation on the N900 very soon. "

So, maybe someone has internal information.......
Or I am wrong.....
