what are you going to try ?
1. charge then switch on ?
2. switch on and see if the damn mic works and the screen actually displays something ?
eagerly waiting for the rest of guys to open and post their findings,
This mic/screen thing has really put me off
cant believe im talking like this abt a 500£ new device !!!

if thats the case then so be it but to be told that i would have my phone by the weekend basically and for 24 hours later to find out it was basically a lie is not ery good the whole reason i signed that contract was for the reason of gettung either today or tomorrow
and as for jon when he could smell a sale coming from me he was rather quick to reply to all emails now when he has me signed up he dont want to get in contact nice work there mate

Did not charge.
Put battery in, turn on, first thing I did was call my other mobile number.
Worked OK! THANK GOD!
Then I plugged it in to charge for the first time. Call again while charging. Worked. Sound quality is the same (I can't really tell the difference)
Hope it helps.
Also I'm using the N97's charger to charge. Doubting the N900's is not good a build and might fry the internals..
I highly suggest everyone follow my steps or risk frying your mic

Venomrush , what exactly is your logic about mic being fried, when you first charge it ?
So do you think its ok to charge it with the same charger once the software is installed properly on the new phone ?
sorry but I didnt quite get the logic , though I did see you were observing it in the other posts.
