Well, the software on which the current forum runs wasn't designed for working that way, while StackOverflow's software is specififally engineered for that specific task.

So, you wouldn't agree on your comment being a bit ... von oben?

(And thank you for pointing out what is what. I wouldn't want to verb something that shouldn't be verbed. )

Well, let's see... I objectively acknowledged his skill and intelligence. Then identified that his frequent trolling behavior was followed by concession when met with moderation.

I fail to see anything "from above" (over the top?) in that....?

Yes, the thread may not have broken the rules specifically, but keeping in mind the below, I think it was the right decision.

The request there was made, in good faith, by prolific contributors, not only to this project, but to the very work you mention. In addition, MeeGo is not Maemo, regardless of the devices on which it is being put on.

This in mind, would you really be happy for the thread to be reopened, despite the people doing the actual work not participating? Seems a bit stubborn and pointless, IMHO.

(i am on my n900, responses might be slow)
I disagree in many respects.

First, is the actual process of closing the thread. Good faith - I can't judge whether or not someone is acting in good faith. But I do know that just because someone wants a thread closed in good faith is not a sufficient reason to do so. The request was made by two people - two! Out of the thousands on this forum and the hundreds actively on this forum. The OP requested it to be closed. That's not a valid reason. What about the other people in the thread before or who could be in the future? And what's to prevent OP of other threads from closing those threads? There was no time for debate; no time for discussion - the request was made and boom it was done! If most of us requested that a thread be closed and it simply would not happen immediately. I suspect the thread was closed because of the person making the request - not the validity of the request. It isn't fair to the vast majority of ordinary community members that whether or not a common action like a thread closing depends on who makes the request.

Second, Meego is discussed in hundreds of threads on this forum. If this was the reason, there would be repeated statements that all such threads are off topic, and then they would all be closed. But that's not it.

Third, it's not about MeeGo - it's about adaptation to N8x0, the overwhelming number of N8x0 community are here, in this forum. Forum threads are useful for communicating the community's desires for the goals of the project. The n8x0 community should be able to discuss the project so that it meets the community's wishes.

Fourth, to me it seems stubborn for people to want the thread closed so noone else can use it. If they don't want to participate, then don't. And if they won't participate in the thread if it stays open, then they are the ones being petty. Let us n8x0 users have our forum back.

Fifth, full disclosure woot, you are part of the team at meego.com, not just some passerby here giving objective thoughts on the propriety of the thread closing.

Let us n8x0 users have our forum back!

I was referring to "from above", yes.

Than I just have to ask about "one smart cookie". If this is a neutral comment with no condescending connotations I'm obviously in the wrong. As far as I know, it's not neutral and your comment didn't come across as objective but this might very well be a case of linguistic failure on my part, me not being a native English speaker and all that.

All I know is that if someone called me "a smart cookie" and described how I managed to abuse the system while trolling, I wouldn't interpret that as an objective comment.

Right, well, to be honest, I'm snipping a lot of what you've said here because it's all in a similar (IMO, nonproductive) vein. As I've mentioned before, if the subject matter matters so much to you, I see no reason why you can't open your own thread to discuss it.

The fact that you haven't done this leads me to think that you're purely making noise about next to nothing instead of trying to proactively contribute. Your tone and way of replying to both me and others about this issue also lends credence to that. Due to precisely that, I won't bother going through your reply in painstaking detail.

However, one thing, I must address:

Here's the full disclosure: I have no position or power at meego.com, I'm registered there and I take part in discussions as anyone else - including yourself - can, that is all. I'm not part of any "meego.com team". I'd appreciate that if you're trying to make a point, you at least get your facts right first. Thanks.

On the point you were trying to make, though, I'd like to note that it is utterly unhelpful and disingenuous to adopt such an "us vs them" attitude, and it is things like this that are why I don't think your complaint can be taken seriously. MeeGo is not some big bad guy out to get you or your n8x0, and nor are the people involved with that community.

And now, personally, I'm done with this topic. If you really must discuss that specific thread, I urge you to take it somewhere else, and we can do that. Right now, let's stick to the topic at hand, which is primarily the problematic negative attitude of tmo.

Have to say here that free speech works in public quite nicely. If someone that has maybe point but zero communication skills tries to speak he might got beaten or people just leave. Here in glory internet we can get interrupted constantly by some "smart" guy that normally would get thrown out of pub. Same kind "rules" should apply here as in everyday face to face communicating. Problem of course are the rules. Normally you can give evil eyes or just show with your gestures that STFU and GTFO and normally people understand those little things (of course after couple of beers things change :|)

I've seen this brought up several times, but never seen anything officially addressed on it.
IMO Thatīs one big problem here. I see lots and lots of good conversations and suggestions but who after all is responsible to make action. So should we do brainstorm and give it TIMELIMIT. It just doesnīt work here so that we start brainstorm and just give it little time and then maybe more time and more conversation. NO things really must move in at least in on month period. On opposite its good to hear many comments and suggestions, but sometimes it feels that place is on turtle pace and itīs killing people.

So what next?

- Should there be vague rules how to behave here?
- Brainstorm about new area that doesn't show in active thread list?(btw. i think active threads is one reason for trolls :| Itīs fun to be in top 10))
- Whole forum system done like on stack overflow (quite unlikely)
- Educated the whole human population to behave?

I'd go for #1 and #2.

#3 is really not going to happen, I think (especially considering that, realistically, maemo.org is probably entering maintenance mode in the foreseeable future)

#4 would be lovely, but I don't think that can happen overnight.

Umm, the topic is closing threads - it's in the title of the thread. That's what I'm talking about.
