It's truly hacky getting stuff to run on it though, plus these players are pretty expensive.

Can you hack a real, working OS onto it?

When I saw the Archos 5 a last week via a link someone posted, I immediately googled "hacking Archos 5" and was so disappointed to discover that there really aren't any hacks for that device.

From a Pocketables article:

Well I did consider one when the Pandora was delayed past Christmas...., but decided against in the end (see above).

I thought at first that Qtopia hack (a very limited hack, at that -- no extra packages can be installed yet) was a hack for the Archos 5, and I got interested, but then I realized it is for the Archos "5 series" which is basically the 605, not the Archos 5. Why does Archos have a "5 series" and a completely different Archos 5 device? I dunno.

Yeah weird isn't it, I see what you mean now, this series 5 stuff (e.g. the 605) have a PXA @ 400MHz on board (thanks wikipedia), presumably with some hw accel for the video, etc.

Not an OMAP3 anyway (plus the screen is no larger than our current ones, if I buy something new, without a kb [argh], then it had better have a big screen!

I don't expect a ship date or a discount
