To the discussion above - the main benefit will be more devices where you can install community OSes as well (Nemo and PlasmaActive). Hopefully the closed part of Jolla won't spread too much into the applications space and will be mostly related to the UI. You can consider Jolla a big tank breaking through stupidity and stubbornness of manufacturers who don't produce Linux compatible devices. Once that tank will break through - everyone will benefit.

Jolla doesn't have much intellectual property, I guess they don't mind doing business in a "wild west" market. They have a certain knowhow, I doubt others could pull off the same with similar manpower. That is their competitive advantage.

It's not any amount of patents that make something successful. I think patents are irrelevant here. Except that Jolla said they won't use them offensively.

I didn't say that they don't need them for defense. I said that it's not what defines any success. And actually against trolls - patents don't help, since trolls have nothing to loose. Patents help against aggressors which have something to loose.

I think the hw will end-up being quite mediocre, but as long as it's a solid improvement over the N900/N9 I'll be happy...
Getting much better hw isn't something they'll be able to "flick-on" from the outset, it's an Android market, hopefully they have a longer-term strategy to ramp-up to the very best hw.
Specialised hw (camera etc) won't be as easy of course, licensing (where applicable) will be the only option in many instances.

Given that SailFish was finally discontinued in 1975 & is succeeded (to this day) by the SunFish.
Then again, perhaps SunFish is the codename for the NEXT iteration of Jolla's OS?
