Come on you ppl - has everyone done mass debating yet ? ffs - its done - stop crying over spilt milk

if you hate Elop, then dont buy Nokia phones

if you like Elop, then buy Nokia phones

its that bloody simple

everyone here seems to think they are an expert with some special insight - fact of the matter is you KNOW NOTHING - or you would have shorted Nokia before the annoucement and made $$$ (pardon my words if you DID - then congrats)

whats with the joy in all this useless speculation ? NO ONE here knows whether a Nokia Meego phone was going to succeed - FFS no one here even knows WHAT the Nokia Meego phone IS - no definitive info has been released - how can you argue whether something will succeed or NOT if you dont even know WHAT IT IS ?

You have NO IDEA what management saw of Meego's completion state.
You have NO IDEA the actual financial incentives offered by MS.
You have NO IDEA how much money will be required to make Meego/Ovi into a viable eco system to compete against the other two majors.

In short you have NO IDEA of the main business drivers making this decision.

Everyone is just guessing, cause engaging in useless arguments is FUN !

Bloody boggles the mind

here is a hint - go outside, breath some fresh air and do something productive

I have used Windows software since day one and it does a hell of a lot more than the N900 ever will do right now so wait untill the devices are actually out in there glory before commenting.... useless to comment otherwise as you dont know what your commenting about.

NB Right now Nokia's Maemo sucks big time and Windows leaves it standing in every aspect entirely so why is people going on about Microsoft when they probably already use XP or whatever as there homebase !!.

Yeah, I agree as well. We don't know. But, I learned some stuff out of this, it inspired me to install Nokia QT SDK for Maemo & have a look at it, and am mid-way through installing the MeeGo SDK for ARM handhelds & Nebtbooks. So, for me it is not all wasted.

Funny, I've owned several of the winCE devices in the 90s, pocketpc phones by HTC.

The winCE devices in the 90s were terrible pieces of very expensive crap.
Nothing they claimed worked, you bought a really expensive PC-card GSM adapter to connect to the net, it never worked.
And nobody, not even Microsoft could help you.

PocketPC was improved, but still suffered from the dll-hell of the 90s and since the filesystems and jet-databases (used by all phone software) kept getting corrupt, the phones needed to be reinstalled every few months. So, to be able to use your phone, you needed to own at least two, and make backups every day.
Also, all the included software was really terrible, which is strange, since a lot of 3rd party software was like 100x better.
Also, if your battery ran out, everything, including your phone numbers was deleted, even though the devices contained huge amounts of flash memory.

Recently Microsoft bricked a lot of users WP7 phones with an update, I don't know what's required to "un-brick" them, but it sure doesn't draw picture of a bright future for nokia.

There's a boatload of reasons why nobody who's compared them to alternatives, will touch microsoft embedded products with a 10 foot pole.

I think I've given MS more than a fair amount of chances to prove they can handle the embedded market, and to say, so far they've blown each one, is an understatement.

Out of experience with MS I know that there are only few things worse than MS and therefore MS on a "smartphone"
(one of these technical things nearly set my living room on fire
some 20 years ago ;-) ).

I mainly write that MS on a "smartphone" will surely be more
horrible than MeeGo. So it is some kind of educated guess
based on past experience. ;-)

Whenever MS comes into my life, productivity drops because of
bugs, unforeseen and sometimes unimaginable quirks, needed workarounds for missing functionality...and so on.

When this happens I really do go outside.

To calm down again.

Well, no. No one over at MeeGo are at each other's throats. They're busy getting things done. It's antagonistic people on both sides here on TMO that are at each others throats.

I despised my iPAQ. First worst thing I did was selling my Psion 3a and getting a Psion 5. Second worst thing I did was getting an iPAQ (which did manage to plug in to my Nokia GSM phone and surf the web at huge expense). Third worst thing was getting a Sony Clie - silly keyboard and the battery died after about 18 months. I gave up on handhelds after that and eventually got a netbook. The n900 was the best thing I have seen since the Psion 3 series.

Hopefully, MS have learned something since the Pocket PC.

They were great weren't they...
I still have mine and use it as a serial terminal.
(Not a psion 3, but the ericsson mc218 variant of psion 5mx I think)
