Someone's mission was accomplished, then.

I have never once argued that point. Just as I don't argue with losing Red Pill. I didn't say, and in fact discourage, this method from being a GUI.

My point is you keep seeming to want to argue with me about protecting the user from themselves is why root is not on the device by default. Others have said it saves Nokia support money.. or whatever.

I still say all of these are folly.. when rootsh is already so easy to get.
I think we've settled that there seems to be some obstacle to that Nokia including root out of the box. Be it support, financial, legal, out of fear of stupid users bricking their phones and blaming them... I don't know what exactly it is, but they have some reservations. On the other hand they have no problem with anyone doing it with a 3rd party app on his own risk. Which is good, and perfectly fine by me. Just as there is ogg support easily installable in the repos, but Nokia is still refusing to add it themselves out of some legal reason.

So i think that there's really no problem. We can encourage the noobs to install rootsh, but warn them to never use it without someone more knowledgeable doing the magic.

The funniest thing about this thread?

The amount of time it's taken to discuss it someone could have hacked up a python app to install a deb file for you.

I even wrote a sh-script for somebody who btched about plans to remove red pill earlier.

and if I saw correct, extras-dev has an app that name implies to functionality of installing debs... just caught my eye for a second when i was installing mirror for front cam improvement testing.

The problem with taking away Red Pill is that now those people can't easily see those apps in a convenient GUI so that they can be easily uninstalled....

I have always preferred the command line to do things, but I like Red Pill so that I can easily/quickly see *all* of the packages installed in the system (and their dependencies) -- not just "extras", "ovi", and a few "optional" maemo apps.

I could care less about eliminating the Red Pill installation option, but I really miss the information that was available under Red Pill (and being able to uninstall packages under Red Pill).

you mean dpkg -l and apt-get show <name>?

there's a reason the packages that are hidden, are hidden, in the normal app manager.

It is difficult to browse. Difference like diff between assembler code and C. I work with assembler but prefer C for big project.

And that is not acceptable for ordinary user - they prefer forms instead of SQL-like commands and output.
