I would be great to somehow verify this (not that it would change the fact but it's good to know for certain), but I guess there's no way to access the magnetometer readings outside of kernel... or is there?

The sensors should be available in userspace. Have a look at, for example, Messwerk [1], it should allow you to visualize (and log) the sensor data.

Thanks @rolh for the tip.

Ok, case confirmed with Messwerk. The readings immediately go to the bottom of the scale (which seems to be around -2 mT) when TOHKBD is attached, and don't move from there regardless of the device position.



Well, I can live with that now that I know what it is about...
