I flashed my 770 with the 2007 HE and still the problem persists at my nearest BT Openzone phonebox access point.

At the same location I tried my IPAQ, and it worked fine - being assigned address 10.176.104.70.

My next test will be to manually assign the address to the 770 and see whether it works... I guess it all helps work out where the problem lies?

Aw f-ck it, this web site is unusable with the poxy adverts causing microb to scroll back to top of page repeatedly.

Don't give BT Openzone money, use the Boingo Worldwide service which allows roaming onto Openzone. Not saying that it makes the link local prob go away - sometimes that happens on my N800 too but it sure is cheaper.

If the problem is with Openzone hotspots then it doesn't matter which roaming provider you log in with - you don't get to see the login page anyway.

My problem is now solved though - BT Openzone support confirmed that there had been a problem with all the wireless city hotspots in Newcastle giving out the wrong IP address, which is now fixed. My 770 can now connect to these hotspots without any problems.

That's good to hear, I work at Heathrow intermittently and have been meaning to take my 770 along on one of my shifts to try it out using BT Openzone Wi-Fi; my ISP is BT Total Broadband: Option 3 so I get 250 minutes per month included in the package
