I prefer Kagu and Canola with Mplayer, I tried using UKMP, but it freezes on the loading covers (48) message.

Due to a bug in the clock module, MediaBox stopped loading after Dec 22nd. This stupid bug has been fixed in the just released version 0.92.1 (http://mediabox.garage.maemo.org).

I've tried all of the players and it seems like canola is the best media center replacement for the n800. For my needs that is. I wanted to use my n800 to replace my mp3 player (zune) which has a neat little interface, and is smooth and a bit flashy. So after seeing all the players, it seems like canola fits the bill. The n800 won't ever reach the simplicity of having a dedicated mp3 player, but thats not why we bough it now is it? .

I hope in the future they will add more settings like an equalizer, the ability to use it in portrait mode, and more themes, but for now its the best one out there.

I do encourage people to try all of them and decide for ones self because not everything fits the needs and taste of everybody. But the great thing about this whole platform is that if somebody doesn't like it they can go make their own!

I'm a N800 newbie who bought the device with a view to using it for media playback. I've been playing with some media players and my thoughts are:

Kagu: Seems to be a total resource hog. My N800 grinds to a halt using it.
Canola: Has some issues with some of my Lame encoded mp3s. Keeps repeating them instead of moving to the next track. Seems to have lots of lag.
Std media player: Seems to be most reliable of all, but it's a bit crude and basic.

I need to play and with these a bit more, but I'm pretty disappointed with what's available compared to that for my Palm Treo.

I'd like to explain some things about open source, community-driven software development.

These aren't finished, commercial applications for which you have to pay and upon which you have no influence. They are free open-source applications undergoing continual development by volunteer authors in cooperation with the user community.

If you have specific, constructive suggestions for things to improve, you can contact the author or post in a forum thread relevant to that particular application. If other users and the author agree with them, you have a fair chance of seeing them implemented.

If, on the other hand, you are limited to saying 'looks primitive' or 'is lame', then you're not submitting constructive criticism, but rather are advertising the fact that you haven't thought enough about the design or usability issues to be able to participate in a discussion about them.

Please understand this and realize that this is how the Internet Tablet open-source community is fundamentally different from a forum about commercial software where end-users are powerless to contribute and can only complain about things.

Hi

I'm a fan of Kagu for my audio playback, the scrobbler component is a nice addition to its usage.

For video playback I'm probably going to be using mplayer and/or mediabox.

Glad to see the return of Video Center to OS2008 thats my podcast support sorted until Canola2 comes out of beta.

ttfn

ArnimS: This is very well put and important for all of us to keep in mind. I myself may have occasionally crossed the borderline of violating its excellent precepts. I suggest this injunction to all of us should be placed permanently in a more conspicuous place in this forum. Congratulations.

If this is aimed at me.....

Then I know about the open source ethos...thanks. I run Ubuntu on everything at home and I am a great believer in open source. Just because it is open source does not mean one cannot make a valid comment about its performance or behaviour without having to go into great detail. You will note that I did not use words like "rubbish", "sucks", "flaky". If I had then your comment would be valid if directed towards me.

Now please spare me your patronising attitude.

I guess finding the best music and video player depends a lot on your usage.

My problem is that I mostly listen to podcasts and watch TV shows during my commutes. When I'm walking, I prefer podcasts, and when I'm in the subway, I want to watch videos. So I end up stopping in the middle of a file often, and I would often need to resume the file later again (after doing other stuff with the media player).

Unfortunately I haven't found one yet that lets you use bookmarks within the file. Also, it would be nice to have a list of recent files, so I could quickly go back to another file.

Is there any media player that would support bookmarking? The other option would be to have different players for video and audio.
