FWIW, I'm running Penquinbait's KDE on my N810. Included in the KDE install is KOffice (Kword, Kpresent, Kspread). KOffice opens, edits, saves etc... OpenOffice docs incredibly well. I use Kword every day in my university classes to edit notes (with images - although there's a jpg bug) that I've pre-made in OOo. I use it work on spreadsheets of data from my research. It's pretty darn cool

And that for me is the dealbreaker. What do when on a long plane flight?

I agree with hordeman, google docs is a godsend, BUT wifi/HSDPA isn't everywhere. We need software, we need openoffice. Thanks for all the input guys

Trying to make Open Office perform adequately on this hardware is a waste of time. What does it give us that abiword and gnumeric can't? Do you really think it's worth the effort to make open office compile, knowing in advance that it will never fit in with the look and feel of hildon/maemo and that it will require anyone who uses it to make a swap file on their memory card? Also, maybe I missed something, but what's the point of having a powerpoint compatible program...on a machine with no video out?

You could run around the room with your Itablet. You know, really fast.

I guess if I had PowerPoint attachment (or file) that I could review on the road it would be valuable to be able to do that. Being able to open XLS or DOC files is all I'd need so a full blown OO would be somewhat unnecessary.

Two cents worth, (if that)

Most documents at the senior/executive levels are written in PP (not just for presentations, but as means of written communications as well). Coupled with frequent coast to coast flights, there are good reasons for why editing PP files on the maemo OS is so important to me (and others).

Flights are a good place to get uninterrupted writing and reading time.

Where can you get abiword? It's not listed at gronmayer's site in any of the repos.

Just use Google docs for viewing/uploading/editing and do all the actual writing in koffice.

Seems like hte perfect solution to me.

Openoffice should run just fine on the n800(770 is SOL) though. I have it on a 300mhz laptop running a full linux desktop with 192mb ram. While the interface and startup times are slow, there is 0 lag when typing.
