Yea, while i am partial to emelfm2 since i know workarounds for all the quirks, for something as (potentially) complicated as setting up apache i'd say use openssh server and since you sound like xp guy, install WinSCP to connect from desktop.

With SSH access you can remotely access the entire device from a destop... i would recommend eventually learning this. Install SSH Server on device and a utility like WinSCP for Windows XP or gFTP for linux.

You will need to configure WinSCP with the IP address, username (root) and password. If you dont know the ip address of device, install IPHome applet.
If you do use emelfm2, then when the time comes to edit those files outside your /home/usr directory, you will need to launch emelfm2 from xterm as root :
sudo gainroot
emelfm2
