My Hildon Desktop kept crashing. Disabled Modest's background e-mail checking, and no crashes.

And yeah. I think we're heading for 770 territory here. Let's hope for a Fremantle Hackers Edition using LiqGL, a software OpenGL implementation that uses lcuk's fast rendering methods...

I still have mixed fellings about Nokia leaving the N800/N810s in the dust when it comes to Fremantle. It gives me a sort of lonlyness, depressing, sad and, empty felling.

Based on your sig, I would say you've left Nokia in the dust.

Nah, that sig is 3 months out of date. I'm just too lazy to update it.

I thought it was unconfirmed if Fremantle will be unavailable for N8xx series? Is it Diablo forever for my N800?

I would understand if eye candy just wouldn't work on the N8x0 and therefore we'd not have the same version of Maemo5. And, to be honest, I couldn't care less.

But I'd assume many of the underlying changes (Bluez with A2DP, Meta Tracker, Pulse Audio, upstart, the new calendar engine.....) could be backported to the existing hardware, as could bug fixes in applications (like modest). This wouldn't be a clean 1:1 copy in most cases, but I'm sure it could work well enough to have at least the functionality of Maemo5 on an N800, without the eye candy.

The question is who would have a (commercial) interest in doing this. Nokia wants to sell hardware.

Mhm... Yes, it is unconfirmed. Which IMHO means 'No'.

In my company, when we start on a software project, we set goals. The management communicates what they want, and the busy ants start coding 28 hours a day. Because all this work makes the ants tired, they don't do more than they need to do.

In other words: Either N8x0-compatibility would be a goal set in advance by the management (then it's a feature that they could confirm right here and now), or it's unconfirmed because nobody set it as a goal in the Maemo5-project - which in turn means nobody will work to achieve it.

But that's only how my company works. Maybe Nokia's different.

question then becomes, will fremantle be so sexy that some kind of community diablo continuation will be impossible because of fragmentation of said community?

I've somewhat been baffled by the fact that everyone seems to think that the eye candy expectred in fremantle (cluster, etc) would be impossible/improbable for the NXX series when projects like canola seem to use similar technologies just fine. Yes, there is a performance cost, but if it does appear to be possible.

its mostly that nokia will probably hinge them on the 3D chip that will have drives in whatever new devices nokia makes. the unknown is this, will they bother to make a software render for them, or not?

imo, the likelyhood is that they wont, as nokia sells hardware, not software. and doing support on products thats been phased out by more recent ones basically costs them money.

and if one wants evidence of past actions, there is always the handling of the 770 to point at...
